The greatest challenges facing Mainers right now include high costs of living and gaps in the skilled labor force. Due to the high cost of homes and rental housing more people are unable to relocate to pursue career opportunities and high rent costs eat away at family budgets. Childcare costs also continue to burden families and deter many others from entering the workforce entirely. On top of this, Maine faces a shortfall of 75,000 workers by 2030, which if unaddressed can slow our economy and reduce state revenues. By investing more in workforce training, supporting in-migration, and expanding affording housing options to boost production, Maine can solve these issues and strengthen our shared future.
It is vital for a functioning democracy that everyone has a seat at the table and that leaders listen to their constituents. As a public school Social Studies teacher, I have always sought to instill in my students their agency as citizens as well as their power as future voters. Creating a culture of civic engagement starts in schools- where students are given opportunities to make meaningful impacts in their communities, not merely answer questions on worksheets. I want to strengthen our state’s civic education resources by providing more training for teachers and programs for students. By creating a culture of rich civic engagement in our schools, students will be empowered as individuals and our communities will be stronger as a result.
With sky-rocketing rent costs and homeownership becoming increasingly unaffordable, Mainers are struggling to stay in their homes and put down roots in communities they love. The state must do more to mitigate this lack of housing options by building on recent successes. The state’s Rural Maine Rental Housing Program has helped to put hundreds of units in the pipeline; let’s expand this program to urban areas so cities like Lewiston can also reap the benefits of new housing development. In addition, all Mainers should be able to attain the American Dream of homeownership, so I support expanding MaineHousing’s First Generation Home and First Home programs which gives our neighbors the ability to buy their first home.
Since graduating from college in Maine, I have taught public middle and high school students for the past eleven years. It is a privilege to teach and strive to empower teenagers who will someday be leading our state. In the classroom, I have learned the importance of listening deeply to build relationships. I will do the same for each of my constituents; listen deeply and always represent your best interests. Through teaching, I have also learned the power of persistence and to never give up on a student. I will bring this same sense of resolve as a legislator in Augusta and promise to leave no stone unturned fighting for what Mainers need.
