My focus during my two terms in the legislature has been on making it more affordable to live and work in Maine and in our communities by increasing the availability of housing for working families, returning state revenue sharing to municipalities, and helping people gain access to education and training. If reelected, I will continue this focus, working for policies that: 1) help our communities and people prosper, 2) assist municipalities in planning for and adapting to a changing future, and 3) create a housing supply that responds to the needs of our people and provides more opportunities for home ownership. Addressing these challenges is vital so that people can have good lives and thrive in Maine.
Serving in Maine’s legislature has brought home for me how important it is that we all engage as citizens in our democracy. I greatly appreciate hearing from constituents, and I prioritize responding to emails and calls and understanding constituents’ concerns. I accept invitations from community groups of all types, so that I can hear from people directly. It’s especially important for young people to get involved, so I look for opportunities to visit schools, share my experiences in state government, and encourage students to communicate with their representatives at all levels of government. There are so many ways to participate, including serving on local committees and advocating for policies that are important to their lives.
In the 131st legislature, I have had the honor of co-chairing the Joint Select Committee on Housing, established to address the housing crisis. With my leadership, the committee focused on addressing the emergency situations facing people who are unhoused or at risk of becoming unhoused, increasing housing production, and fixing the systemic barriers to housing. We have made progress on all three fronts. We created the Housing First program to provide permanent supportive housing for people in chronic homelessness. We funded the construction of thousands of new affordable and attainable housing units. And we began to solve the problems communities face as they try to create housing. I am the best candidate to carry forward this vital work
I have a deep connection to our community and I’m dedicated to protecting and improving the well-being of the people of our district. Having raised my two children here, I work to preserve the ability of other families to do the same. Climate change is dramatically affecting our district, our coastal infrastructure, and our working waterfronts. I will work to assure that we have the resources to address the impacts of climate change. And I will always vote to protect women’s right to make the reproductive health decisions that affect our bodies, our families, and every aspect of our lives. I will defend and advance Maine laws that guarantee abortion rights, and I will vote to keep government out of our private healthcare decisions.
