The priorities of Senate District 29 are at the heart of my work. Ensuring community safety, protecting our environment, supporting our working families by making health care and housing affordable, and providing access to justice in Maine courts are urgent issues in our community and throughout Maine. As Senator, Senate Chair of the Judiciary Committee, Senate Chair of the Gun Safety Caucus and member of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, I sponsor legislation and serve in leadership roles to address these issues for the benefit of my constituents and all Mainers.
In my experience, Mainers have a high degree of civic engagement -- I'm proud to live in a state that regularly ranks among the top in voter turnout. I've consistently supported legislation that ensures voting is accessible in Maine, making it convenient to register and to vote absentee so everyone has the opportunity to make their voices heard. I've opposed legislation that imposes barriers to voting. Helping Mainers participate in the legislative process is important to me. I'll continue to invite young people to participate as honorary pages and to job shadow during session. I am working to increase transparency and support those who want to testify on legislation by changing our rules to give better notice of proposed amendments.
I see two major priorities to address the need for affordable housing. First, we must continue to provide funds to ensure that construction of affordable housing of all types helps us meet the need for additional dwelling units. Second, while we are bringing more affordable housing up to the necessary level, we must do all we can to keep people housed. This is something I've been working on, for example by updating tenant protections to provide better notice of rent increases and to prevent retaliatory evictions when tenants point out illegal actions by their landlord.
