Affordability is, in my view, the most significant challenge facing Maine today. The district I represent is within 20 miles of four of the state’s largest employers—Midcoast Hospital, Bath Iron Works, LLBean, and Bowdoin College—yet home prices are unaffordable for the average worker at these businesses. Additionally, we recently learned that Maine ranks sixth in the nation for the highest grocery prices. We also face high energy costs. We have many challenges to tackle to ensure a sustainable, prosperous future for Mainers, but we won’t be able to take them on in a sustained way until we address the financial stresses that average Mainers face.
One of the most effective ways to increase civic engagement is through regular communication with constituents, using clear and concise messages, and concrete calls to action for everyone, regardless of their stance on an issue. It's essential to make it easy for people to understand how they can engage and feel comfortable reaching out to ask questions and get involved in the democratic process. Regular, transparent, open communication has been a focus of my work in my district over the past two years.
I will continue to support funding initiatives that incentivize the development of new housing units affordable to Mainers earning between 80-130% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Additionally, I will back programs that facilitate repairs to aging housing stock. I’ll also encourage community members to support land use ordinance changes that promote the development of intergenerational housing while preserving open spaces and contiguous wildlife habitats.
I am a dedicated and hardworking representative who takes my responsibilities as a legislator seriously. I will work to improve our tax code for the middle class and folks on fixed incomes, to protect Maine’s laws and citizens from outside interference, and to ensure a well-functioning state government. I believe everyone deserves to live with dignity, and I will work hard every day for policies that deliver that for Maine.
