We are getting caught up in the Left vs Right fight and losing track of the real issues, the Maine working poor struggle so hard to make ends meat, they make to much money for help but not enough for healthcare, living paycheck to paycheck using credit cards to just get by, we talk about the middle class but for most of us we are far far from middle class, we need to come together to fight inflation, corp greed, fuel prices, electric prices. we need to come together to find affordable housing for people and fix our broken DHHS system so that our foster kids can not just survive but thrive, give foster parents more tools to succeed. and our veterans need better representation all politicians say they are pro vet but the actions are there
we have to start at a young level, in grammar school we talked about elections, we talked about what these people are running for and what there jobs are we talked about facts not opinions and had mock elections, we should encourage programs like JMG in our schools and take field trips to our local town offices and job shadow to find out what goes on in our local politics, show them a selectboard meeting and ask them what they want to see happen in their towns. letting kids know that they have a say in the future of their town and they matter will increase engagement. having representatives show up at town meetings and local events, lets them know that they are being heard and that they matter. if you feel you don't matter you wont show up
one idea I have is for abandoned land that eventually gets taken by the town for back taxes, current state law says the town can only sell it for the taxes that are due and then anything over that must be paid to the owner, if owners can not be found the towns often dont do anything with the land, if we offered it first to developers or habitat for humanity who build affordable housing for the tax amount they could build affordable housing
I am a dad of 5 a grand dad of 7 a foster parent and a happily married gay man who is passionate about helping others, my dream is to make life easier for kids like I was. I am always willing to jump in and help and Im not afraid of doing the right thing. I may not be as left as some want or as right as others but at the end of the day i don't represent myself I represent those in my district, and i plan on doing just that!
