Our nation definitely faces large challenges today, including the high cost of prescription drugs, high day-to-day life costs, attacks on women’s freedom, and the continuing threats to Americans. On each score, House Democrats have enacted or proposed smart, aggressive solutions. Thanks to a law Democrats passed, the price of insulin has been capped at $35 for millions of Americans. For the first time ever, Medicare is negotiating the price of 10 popular medications. Inflation is falling since Democrats enacted the Inflation Reduction Act. And while we did not succeed in restoring Roe yet, Democrats remain united to protecting women’s health care. Regarding threats to our democracy, the first way to protect American democracy is to support Joe Biden for re-election. The former president remains the greatest threat to American democracy our nation has ever encountered and must be defeated. We must fight back against even a hint of authoritarianism. I use my office to do that every day.
The American economy today is the envy of the entire world. Over 15,000,000 jobs have been created since 2021. Factories are booming. Wages are rising. Inflation is falling. The jobless rate has dropped to historic lows and stayed there. Jobs are coming home from overseas. All of that is the direct result of forward-looking policies passed by Democrats, beginning with the American Rescue Plan and Inflation Reduction Act. I voted for both of them. Did you know that since the dawn of globalization in 1989, over 96% of new jobs created by our economy were created under Democratic Presidents? The proof is in the pudding: the policies we have enacted are creating a stronger, fairer economy.
First and foremost we must reauthorize the Voting Rights Act named for my good friend the late John Lewis. The Voting Rights Act is one of the greatest laws ever enacted in America because for the first time it ensured that America can be a true democracy. The law must be fully restored to protect our elections and the votes of our neighbors. The very foundation of liberty is your right to vote. Churchill said a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can put its pants on. Demagogues and would-be authoritarians who tell Big Lies about our elections must be fought hammer and tong. I do that every day.
We need comprehensive immigration reform and a path for Dreamers. But our nation also has the right to know who is coming into our country and protect its border. Senate Democrats worked hard this year to fashion a once-in-a-generation immigration reform package, working with a handful of Republicans. It contained some strong elements, but it was a true compromise between the parties – the very nature of divided government. And extremist Republicans killed it immediately. They killed it because they think keeping the issue alive is a helpful election ploy. Their cynicism is a disgrace. I have always believed that America’s strength comes from its diversity and hard working immigrants are an important part of our community. But we must enforce our laws. We must pursue fair immigration reform and stop using the issue as nothing but a political weapon.
One of my proudest votes in office was for the landmark Inflation Reduction Act in 2022. Among other things, the law created the largest investments to fight climate change in our nation’s history. And the law is working: our government is helping Americans create more climate friendly policies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Similarly, I am a longtime proponent of wind energy, and have used my perch on Congress’s top tax-writing committee to expand wind energy coast to coast to create clean, green union jobs. I want to leave a world safe and healthy for our children and for our grandchildren.
I view choice as a matter of women’s freedom. A woman’s control over her health care decisions is between her and her doctor and no one else. Period. Extremist politicians shouldn’t be within a thousand miles of a women’s examination room. Roe v. Wade was the law of the land for nearly half a century and it must be restored. I was proud to vote twice to restore Roe as the law of America in the 117th Congress. Every single Republican in Congress voted against it. When Democrats voted in Congress to keep birth control legal in America, 96% of House Republicans voted no. I strongly oppose attempts to ban birth control and I oppose the Supreme Court outlawing women’s health drugs like Mifepristone. Donald Trump continues to brag about ending Roe v. Wade and I would restore it. My dedication to protecting women’s freedom is unshakeable and I will continue to speak out every day in office.
Our greatest foreign policy challenge is the threat to democracy abroad by ruthless dictators, beginning with those in Russia, China, and Iran. Putin, Xi, and others despise freedom and liberty and are working overtime to spread their cruelty across the world. In word and deed we must fight them. That means supporting Ukraine in its fight for survival against Russia, and supporting our close allies Japan, S Korea, and others against Chinese expansion, as well as the victims of Chinese communist dictatorship, including Uyghurs and Tibetans. That House Republicans continue to block Ukraine aid is an outrage. The historic CHIPS Act passed we enacted is bringing jobs home from China to America. America’s economy is growing faster than China’s for the first time in decades. That is because of Democrats’ successful policies. We cannot accept leaders who valorize Putin and Xi and would abandon our allies and end NATO. I support an America that still leads the world in defense of democracy.
