Many of the biggest challenges facing our country are top priorities for our 8th District – affordability, autonomy, equality, preserving our democracy, and more. We work to address these issues every day by: Creating legislation like the Working Families Task Force Act, which would create a federal task force to improve quality of life for families throughout America by addressing top priorities like affordability, job access, and child care; Securing funding to transform our district and create opportunity for our residents, including $6.9 billion for the Gateway Program and $4 billion for our Northeast Corridor; Advocating for humane treatment for refugees by working with my Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Immigration Task Force co-chair to develop a set of Immigration Principles that provide a roadmap for a better future; And standing with House Democrats against MAGA extremism by co-sponsoring powerful bills such as the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Equality Act.
We must continue to address systemic disparities such as the wage gap and work together to combat hate everywhere. I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the Equality Act, which would extend non-discrimination protections to members of the LGBTQIA+ communities; as well as the Raise the Wage Act of 2023, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $17 an hour by 2028. I am also proud to have introduced the Parental Workforce Training Act which would create a pilot program to provide $10 million in federal grants to local workforce boards for the purpose of subsidizing childcare costs. Nobody should be forced to make a choice between their career and caring for their loved ones. We will always advocate for and stand with our unions in the fight for fair wages, workplace protections, and the right to organize. And we ensure that our teams – in New Jersey and in Washington – reflect the diversity of our 8th District.
It is incumbent on all of us to ensure our democracy remains fair and accessible. Our campaign is committed to educating voters and providing resources to help navigate the voting process, including information about registration deadlines, polling locations, and voting options. And we will be happy to assist voters who encounter any issues at the polls. In the 118th Congress, I am proud to be a cosponsor of the Freedom to Vote Act, which will safeguard the right to vote, expand voting registration and access, and establish Election Day as a federal holiday. Civic engagement and participation is the linchpin of our democracy. We must act to remove obstacles that many Americans face when voting – so that all who are eligible to participate in our elections are able to do so.
America is a nation of immigrants. We need to treat newcomers, refugees, and asylum-seekers with humanity and respect. The first step is to welcome in people with DACA or Temporary Protected Status (TPS) – folks who have always called America home, or cannot return safely to their countries. We must act now to make sure that they are afforded every protection under law that empowers them to be active members of a society that they contribute so much to. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ (CHC) Immigration Task Force, I developed CHC’s comprehensive list of immigration priorities, which included protections for DACA-eligible individuals and TPS holders.
Climate change is not a looming crisis. It is here. We must take action. For our 8th District, we’ve delivered nearly $10M in federal funding via Environmental Justice Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry grant awards – and $7M in a FTA grant for commuter ferry electrification. We will continue to fight for environmental justice grants so that majority-minority communities aren’t forced to shoulder the burden of climate destruction. I am a vocal proponent for future-forward infrastructure and clean energy jobs. We should make it advantageous for working families to help the environment by providing cost savings as they transition their homes to clean energy, and as we strive to cut greenhouse emissions in half by 2030.
I will fight tirelessly to codify Roe v. Wade and strengthen reproductive rights. Every woman deserves their fundamental freedom, autonomy, and the right to choose. In Congress, I will continue to support legislation that protects a woman’s ability to access medical treatment, advocate to make it easier to receive medications through mail, and work to repeal the Hyde Amendment which only serves to make it harder for people of limited means to access safe abortions.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has threatened to upend the Western world order. If Russia is allowed to win this war, they will be a direct threat to NATO and our European allies. We must support Ukraine and provide them with the weapons and aid that they need to fight back against Putin’s brutal invasion, because it isn’t just about Ukraine, but about Europe and NATO. I strongly support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in fighting back against Russian aggression.
