Town Where You Live Deschutes County
Your Experience/Qualifications 23 years as a lawyer, 12 years as Circuit Court Judge for Deschutes County (11th Judicial District)
County Deschutes
Term 6 years
Term Expires 12/31/30
I have 27 years of legal experience, 12 of which have been as a Circuit Court Judge for Deschutes County. I have wide-ranging experience handling all criminal, civil and family law matters as a judge. I am the second-most senior judge on our bench, and regularly preside over our community's most serious and complex legal cases.
I am guided by statutory and constitutional law as the framework for all of my legal decision-making. I ensure defendants due process and an opportunity to be heard, and I consider all aggravating and mitigating factors in my sentencing decisions, while understanding that each individual and their circumstances are unique. My goal for sentencing decisions is to exercise my judicial authority to craft sentences that appropriately consider and balance offender accountability, punishment, community safety, reformation and rehabilitation.
I support an adequately resourced judicial branch, including an appropriate number of judges given the population of the judicial district, as well as adequate compensation for judges. This will help the judiciary to recruit and maintain judges who have the broad legal experience and expertise necessary to address current and future challenges faced by the judicial branch.
