I originally ran for the Webb City Board of Education in 2009 to give back to my community. The past fifteen years have been very rewarding to serve the district that provided me a great public education. I was inspired by many teachers and I love public education. Every year the district faces new legislation challenges. Board members need to be informed and be willing to speak to legislators about the effects new legislation will have on public education. I completed the certification required for board members in 2009. During my tenure, the district has added many new programs and facilities. Board members must be willing to enforce board policy and be willing to listen to district constituents. I have a heart to serve the district that gave me the foundation that I needed to be successful in college and beyond. I want to continue service to the community as a member of the Webb City R-7 Board of Education.
Salaries for staff are the first priority. The Board is committed to employing the best staff for the students in Webb City. We must also maintain safe facilities and transportation for the students. We have also always strived to offer a variety of activities for students beyond the classroom. We must maintain a budget within the income available each year from the various funding streams.
Budget cuts must first be found in efficiencies for the district. The district has been committed to small class sizes for several decades. The district exists to educate, so the classroom is a number one priority. Before cutting any staff or programs, an increase in the tax levy would need to be considered. We are here to educate and we must make sure that is the number one priority. I would not consider any cuts before going through the budget and exhausting any/all efforts to not offer particular programs in the future.
Each school has a principal and librarian These individuals are trained on what is appropriate for students. They are the experts. I would first want to hear from them on what is appropriate. The Board of Education must ensure that board policy is followed. In our current day and age, opinions vary on what some may find objectionable. Responsibility is on the district to provide appropriate materials and it rests with parents to be in tune with what their student(s) are learning. Students will learn from the instruction of professional staff to know what is appropriate for their situation and they should have conversations with their parents so they understand if their parents approve. Parent and teacher communication should take place often so the students are best served by the district.
I am not in favor of open enrollment. The buildings in the district are built to hold a certain amount of students. Webb City has kept class sizes smaller to make sure instruction is the best it can be. Our district has the best interests of the students and families that we serve in mind. The state has limited funds for public education. Families have the right to choose a private school for their children. The majority of families cannot afford a private education for their students. We must continue to advocate for public education. The Webb City district has a proven policy to serve students who are home-schooled.

I believe in servant leadership. This community has offered me so much thanks to public education and I am proud to serve and offer my expertise to continue the safest, and most educational opportunities for our children. I am a firm supporter of safe schools to educate our children. I am a safety and health manager overseeing 24 locations in the USA. I will always support safety in our buildings. I know this community and will continue to support all efforts to make us the best public school that I know exists.
I rely on our administration to tell us what the needs are. My #1 priority is for academics. If we need money to improve academics for children, then that is what will come first. I believe we have to spend money for extracurricular areas to further student development, however; grades and academics come before that.
Budget priorities are based on meetings we have with administration. If they further benefit the education of a student, then it becomes priority. Cutting out budget items becomes an opportunity to see what is not adding value to the goal of educating kids.
Our administration, teachers, and librarians are all involved in this process. The key part is that parents understand what may be in the hands of their child. If there is a concern, it should be brought to the administration so that our schools can determine if it should remain. Parents need to be responsible all the time, and that includes knowing what their child is reading.
I am a 100% supporter of Public Education. Everything mentioned in this question relates to taxing all of us for parents who decide to go to private, home school, or charter schools, which are not held to the same standards of academic excellence that public schools are. Those private or charter schools can deny a kid due to a disability, IEP, etc., in which the child comes to us...PUBLIC EDUCATION. We lose funding because the state gives more funding to private or charter schools and we get taxed for it, even though many of those kids will come back to us. Open enrollment is not good for public education. We have to get back to the fundamentals of educating a child so that they can be a valuable resource in our communities. I support Public Education 100%!
