Nebraska State Legislative District 01

4-year term, limited to two consecutive terms, $12,000Members of the country’s only unicameral legislative body create laws and make the rules for Nebraskans under certain constitutional limitations. This body also oversees many health care services and decides how much money public schools (from kindergartens to colleges) receive each year. If you are concerned about who pays how much in taxes and how those funds get spent, this is a very important election.

My immediate concern is current policy shifting public funding towards private education. My solution would be to repeal legislation. We must preserve our public schools.
I would recommend legislation making Nebraska's water sustainable for human use. Nebraska has one of the largest underground sources of fresh water in the United States. We must protect this from contamination, depletion and water diversion projects.
One of the biggest challenges facing our state is rising property taxes due to the increase in property valuations. It is putting a strain on property owners. We must consider what we need to maintain roads, educate our citizens, and care for the least among us. All alternatives will face opposition. There is growing inequality in our tax system. We have put ourselves in a bind by reducing income tax rates in the higher brackets and reducing corporate taxation. Another challenge the state faces is falling behind in it's funding to public schools. Nebraska ranks 49th in state aid to schools. Using public dollars to fund private schools would violate our Nebraska State Constitution.
