Public service is my life’s passion. I have had the honor of serving local communities, national communities, and everything in between for decades. Since I returned to Congress in 2020, I have zealously represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District through a global pandemic and in its wake. I feel very prepared to continue serving the People in Congress - based on my most recent experiences as a member of Congress, service as national NAACP president, and former service in Congress.
John Lewis, the former congressman and noted civil rights activist, and I came to Congress together in the 100th Congress. I am proud to cosponsor the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which encompasses many of the voting rights protections and election security measures our nation needs. Specific actions the United State government should take include restoring and strengthening the Voting Rights Act of 1965, ending the Citizens United, and expanding vote by mail options.
I have worked hard in Congress to be a leader in the effort to invest in a green economy, grow electric vehicle adoption, reduce carbon emissions, protect the Chesapeake Bay, and hold polluters accountable. This work includes helping to pass the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, keeping out of state pollutants from being discarded in Maryland, helping to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, funding environmental justice initiatives, and more.
America is a country of immigrants. Humane immigration policies are required at our borders so that we will not have to relive the border tragedies of the prior administration, e.g., permanently tearing children away from their parents or immediately criminalizing humans at our borders. I support working to create a well-reasoned and verifiable pathway to citizenship through the legislative process.
There are too many guns in the hands of too many people who should not have them. I support an assault weapons ban and have introduced legislation to curb the gun violence epidemic that plagues our nation, including legislation to combat the mass shooting epidemic with the Identifying Mass Shooters Act and legislation to curb the proliferation of online access to bullets and other ammunition with the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act.
