I am running to be re-elected to the Omaha Public Schools Board to continue my service to, and support of, public education in Omaha. In the past three years, I have actively supported several initiatives concerning high school curriculum programs, data transparency, and community outreach that I would like to continue. In addition, under the leadership of the new superintendent, programs designed to assure grade level literacy and improved graduation rates are being formulated and my 16 years as a classroom teacher and four years on the OPS Board make me especially qualified to engage in the implementation of those programs. Omaha's public schools are excellent -- and I look forward to continuing doing my part to keep them that way.

The role and responsibility of a school board member is to establish district-wide policy, approve the district budget, evaluate and employ the superintendent and serve as ambassador for constituents. These duties govern the mission of the school district, such as policies about student conduct, budget decisions about curriculum materials and building improvement, the skills and priorities of the superintendent, and community input and communication. Daily, and with planning long-range, it is the responsibility of the superintendent to administer the operation of the district and make sure the district has qualified personnel, engaging curriculum and materials, and physical spaces that best suit the needs of our students.

To best ensure the success of our students, the partnership between schools and parents must be a priority, with every one having a responsibility to work toward that goal. Schools are responsible for providing safe places that foster learning and curiosity and social skills and for welcoming parents into the education process by communicating expectations and creating opportunities to participate. Parents are responsible for supporting their student's education by prioritizing attendance and preparation and helping school personnel best serve their students by communicating concerns and reinforcing social skill expectations.
