Brookline Town Meeting - Pct 01 - Three Years {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

Town Meeting is Brookline s Legislative arm of government. It consists of 255 elected Town Meeting Members plus the members of the Select Board, and any state representative or state senator who resides in Brookline. In addition, the Town Moderator, who presides over Town Meeting, and the elected Town Clerk, who acts as secretary, are voting members. The 255 membersare elected by precinct, with 15 members elected from each of the Town s seventeen precincts. The members are elected for staggered, 3-year terms so that 5 members are elected from each precinct each year in the May annual town election. Depending on vacancies some precincts will have more members to be elected.Town Meeting is responsible for passing a balanced annual town budget and enacts all town by-laws. An Annual Town Meeting is held in the spring to enact the following year s budget, plus whatever other matters are placed on the Town Meeting Warrant, either by the Select Board or by citizen petition. The Annual Town Meeting is usually held the last week in May or the first week in June. A Special Town Meeting is held each fall, usually in November, to deal with any budget changes, zoning by-law amendments or other matters placed on the warrant. I've lived in Brookline nearly 20 years and have been politically active here for most of that time. In addition to serving Precinct 1 as a tmm, for nine years I've served on Brookline's Advisory (finance) Committee and on its Administration & Finance and Public Safety subcommittees. I've been an elected Brookline Constable for nearly eleven years. As a tmm, I've sponsored numerous warrant articles, many of them Brookline bylaw amendments, among those: requiring Advisory Committee members' votes to be recorded and reported; changing bylaw pronouns to gender neutral; defining rules for Election Day signs; enhancing campaign finance transparency; and redefining eligibility to serve on Brookline boards, committees and commissions.
An effective tmm balances neighborhood concerns with the overall welfare of the town. I've tried to do that for as long as I've been a tmm. At my best, I am well informed on neighborhood issues and the concerns of constituents, and express those concerns to town officials and to my tmm colleagues. Similarly, I strive to be well informed on townwide issues and issues impacting other precincts, and bring an understanding of those issues to my precinct constituents. It's long been my practice to reach out to constituents to inform them, and especially on significant issues to be taken up by town meeting. I've always been open to receiving phone calls, and have a particular penchant for chatting with neighbors I see when we are out and about.

I am a primary care pharmacist at a teaching institution and Brookline resident since '07. I grew up in SoCal, but consider Brookline home with many family and friends living here. I'm a member of the Bicycle Advisory Committee and also look to improve the town for pedestrians (I voted for the increased budget for sidewalks) and vulnerable members of our community (such as the elderly, children and people of all abilities). I have advocated for improved bicycle infrastructure and parking in our parks/business districts over the past 2 years. I also bring a healthcare provider's perspective to policy such as with the bylaw in 2023 banning firearms in parks and other town property.
Being available to my neighbors and those who live in my community to hear their concerns and to advocate for them. In 2022, we had an issue with rat infestation in Knyvet and this was the impetus for me to file a warrant article to increase funding for town resources to improve waste management (a composter, additional staff and Big Belly waste containers)--that aligned with being cost-effective. I was a co-petitioner increasing fines on those who break the law regarding waste disposal. I voted for the MBTA-CD plan that my neighbors voiced as a priority. I've knocked on doors the past few years even when I wasn't running, this year is no different. Please give me 3 more years to continue the unfinished work of improving our hometown!

Originally from Athens, Georgia, I have lived in Brookline since 2004. I went to Wellesley College (Political Science) and MassArt (Metals) and have lived in the UK and Australia.

My husband Richard and I are newly empty nesters, with three teen/young adult children spreading their wings. All three attended Lawrence from 2006-2020 and we were very involved as a family, particularly in the Art, Music and Drama programs, the PTO and international events. I ran the PTO Phonathon for 8 years. Our oldest graduated from BHS in 2020, in full pandemic mode and the next couple of years were certainly filled with shifting plans and expectations.

I work in the world of design/decorative arts and am in the process of launching a small business.

Precinct One is diverse demographically, and it is the responsibility of a TMM to be aware of the needs and concerns of ALL residents. I have been involved with many organizations in P1 over the years and will continue to do so. These have included The Brookline Food Pantry at Egmont, Church of Our Saviour on Monmouth, Cottage Farm Neighborhood Association and I have recently joined the Boston University Neighborhood Task Force. While I don't have a newsletter, or any official outgoing method for communicating back to the community as yet, I am always out and about in the neighborhood talking with people at the parks and in our busy business district. I welcome any communication and feedback from P1 residents, email is best.

Born in NYC; raised in California. Family originally from Boston with deep ties in area. Lawyer, ethicist and surgeon. Employed at HMS hospitals (first BIDMC then BWH) since 2012. Nationally recognized expert in law and ethics in women's health. Mother to 4.
My primary reason for running is my concern for equitable housing and a respect for environmental resources as our Town expands. I will make my email and phone available and will hold open zoom meeting for constituents interested in these issues and so that they might bring up their own concerns for me to bring forward. While I have fairly well developed ideas about equity in housing and the need to still protect and nurture open spaces, I recognize as a publicly elected official I must ensure I am bringing forward the ideas and beliefs of my constituents as well.

Sarah has been a resident of Brookline since 2004. She was caucused into Town Meeting Precinct 1 and was chosen by the Select Board and School Committee to fill a vacancy on the School Committee in November, 2023. When she joined the School Committee, she signed up for the Finance and Capital Improvement Subcommittees. She takes advantage of the bike lanes and public transportation in our town and enjoys our parks. She is the mother of three children and her youngest is at the Lawrence School. Sarah's mother is aging, living in a nearby community, and Sarah has learned a lot about how seniors can age in place with the support of their network. Her husband's grandmother benefitted greatly from Brookline's Hebrew SeniorLife.
I see town politics as being all about conversations. I am actively engaged with my neighbors in conversations about what can be improved in our town and I maintain relationships with other town meetings members to hear about their points of view. I read our town's online newspaper, the meeting materials for the different governing boards and as a School Committee member, I engage in decisions for our schools. As a part of that work, I follow the budget process closely. Another issue I follow is increased housing development. My neighbors ask frequent questions and I am able to give them informed replies.
