The most important issue facing Dunn County is smart development both in farmland and in town. Smart development means consideration of water resources and waste removal when planning new development. Careful and honest dialogue must take place between town and village planners, business owners and residents before final planning for development goes forward. Land use studies and consideration of future impact on the well-being of current residents must be made.
Protection of our precious natural resources is of utmost importance, including forest, water and soil. Dunn County has beautiful forest, parks and trails. The farm land is exceptional for raising crops and animals. It is the life blood of our economy. To address this issue, careful consideration should be made by all players effected by changes to the landscape through mining or clearing of forests, large commercial or residential development, and new large farm development. All those involved could attend several town hall meetings to consider the changes and potential impact to the health of the people and the land.
The third most important issue to me is the development of alternative energy sources in the county to keep Dunn County as self-sufficient as possible in energy resources. The county should continue its work on energy efficiency upgrades to buildings, and expand the electric bus fleet for our public transit. To accomplish this, more county buildings could add solar panels, and develop solar gardens on county land. The cooperative efforts between Xcel Energy and the City of Menomonie could expand to discussions between townships and other energy providers.
My two top priority areas of concerns in the upcoming budget would be as follows: 1. Any development whether for houses, roads or bridges, should keep in mind future extreme weather events. To address this the county should always build for future extreme weather thus avoiding higher costs to rebuild and repair. 2. County sustainability goals should be part of the top considerations of the county budget. To address this each committee and each department should have the sustainability goals at the forefront of discussion, planning and decision.
