I believe that school staffing and teacher retention is the biggest issue our school district is currently facing. From my discussions with current teachers this will take a multistep effort to improve. I believe that the proposed salary increases are a necessary and important first step and I fully support that proposal. While I recognize the concern regarding where the funds will come from, I believe as a board member I will make decisions that are carefully considered and discussed to ensure being fiscally responsible. Recognizing and acknowledging the value of our teachers and school staff contributes to teacher/staff retention, which goes beyond finance. Involving staff at all levels in decision making conversations are imperative.
I believe face to face conversations are going to be the best way we work together as a community. This is going to take a few steps, patience, and respect. Offering town halls and round tables that are focused on district staff and families first. This will provide the board with the opportunity to learn about the day-to-day activities and responsibilities of those directly impacted by our schools. The purpose would be to provide a firm background and reference point for decision making. Once those have been established and functioning productively, I can see these expanding into broader conversations with those stakeholders not directly involved with the day to day of our district.
