As manager of the Hickory Farmers Market I have created a thriving weekly year round market by growing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders from vendors and community organizations to city officials and the general public. My 25 years in Catawba County began in hosiery, and have given me firsthand experience in the area's economic evolution and reinvention. Being an artist, I bring creativity to everything I do. As a mother I am driven to create a brighter, safer, cleaner future for all our children, where they are healthy, free and empowered. I am a good listener. I care about people. I can connect with diverse individuals and groups to find common ground, and craft solutions to challenges for all citizens in our district.
Fully funding our public schools. NC currently ranks last in the country for K-12 funding. We are losing wonderful teachers to other states. We must pay our educators so they want to teach our next generation in North Carolina. I believe a strong public education system is the foundation of a thriving community. It improves the overall health of its citizens, lowers crime and attracts industry and workforces. It gives every child a chance, no matter who their parents are. The under-funding and sending money to unregulated options is undermining the strong educational base that has made our state a bright light. We need to re-focus in the right direction on our children and the future, by shoring up our public education system.
We need to appropriately fund our public education system. It affects everything that is good in our communities. Rather than fulfilling the state courts' mandate to fully finance our public schools, the Republicans in the state legislature opted to allocate billions of our tax money to private schools, enabling wealthy people to enroll their children in exclusive academies. These private institutions operate without regulation or oversight, so it makes no fiscal sense for our public tax dollars be spent there. School choice is fine, but not with our public tax dollars. Another example of how Democrats are actually the true fiscal conservatives.
I support a fair and progressive tax system that ensures the wealthy pay their fair share while providing relief for lower and middle-income families. I also advocate for investing in education, healthcare, and infrastructure through tax revenue to create a thriving and more equitable society, and stimulate economic growth. I support measures such as expanding tax credits for working families and increasing funding for public services. I view tax policy as a means to create opportunities for all residents, and build a stronger and more inclusive economy.
Pass common sense gun legislation, such as universal background checks, closing loopholes in existing gun laws, and implementing red flag laws. Most citizens are in favor of these modest but impactful measures. Supporting programs that provide job training, education, and economic opportunities for at-risk youth to prevent them from turning to crime. Policies encouraging community policing initiatives that emphasize building trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Make mental health care accessible and affordable for every person. And again, funding public education and ensuring we have strong public school systems make our communities safer.

I have been posting on my social media about the issues I support. The things I stand for are actually universally popular with most voters. Personal freedoms. Strong, safe schools and communities. A thriving middle class. Access to affordable health care. Access to birth control. Transparency in government. Affordable housing. Support of small businesses. Investing in infrastructure. Taking care of our veterans. Making sure every citizen can vote and that their vote counts. Taking care of each other. I love our community. I want our government to invest in the things that will make life better for all of us. Giving giant tax breaks to big corporations might sound good in the short term, but if we are not fully funding our public schools, and taxes and insurance rates are sky-high, they won't be able to attract the quality workforces they need to operate here. We are more alike than we are different. I am happy to work with Republicans to do great things for our district and state.
