We have a rule at my house – if you are going to complain or say “no” to something, you MUST have an alternative. You cannot just simply complain. I am running for County Commission because I want to be a solution and actively contribute to my community’s development by shaping local policies, advocating for residents’ needs, and working towards improving essential services. It has been a privilege to serve this community as County Commissioner over the past 4 years, and I am eager to continue the work I have started with addressing community needs, shaping policy, promoting sustainable growth, fostering positive change at the grassroots level and breaking glass ceilings for future generations.
I have lived in Knoxville, specifically District 2, most of my life. I worked for the State Senate as a Bill Clerk and then the TN Dept. of Economic and Community Development. I taught in public high schools, and I have 2 children of my own who attend Knox County Schools. I organized and founded my neighborhood’s association. I worked for the City of Knoxville’s Office of Neighborhood Empowerment. I ran for the seat in 2020 and have been serving as Commissioner for the past 4 years. I was elected by my peers as the first woman chair of Commission. I know how policy is made. I know what happens in the classroom. I know how to organize neighbors for a common purpose. I know these things because I have experienced them myself. I am ready.
I support policies that include a combination of affordable housing initiatives, support for mental health and addiction services, job training programs, and social services. Collaboration between local government, non-profits, and community organizations is crucial to creating a comprehensive strategy to tackle homelessness effectively. I will continue to support the Knoxville/Knox County Office of Housing Stability by helping to strengthen our coordination and alignment and create a shared vision to align the system around collective impact goals. Implementing a mix of these policies, tailored to the specific needs of the community, can contribute to alleviating housing shortages and promoting affordability.

The challenges growth presents to my district and Knox County include increased traffic congestion, strain on infrastructure, potential environmental impact, rising housing costs, and demands on public services. My district (Commission District 2) is entirely within city limits. Since there is limited available land for new development within the city limits, it is important to consider creative zoning policies to create more attainable housing. Challenges related to county growth include preserving green space while keeping pace with the demand for housing. Balancing development with the preservation of community character and addressing these challenges requires thoughtful planning and engagement with stakeholders.
