As a candidate for this office, my goal is to represent and advocate for the 1st District. My focus is to listen to constituent concerns and prioritize legislative and policy issues that impact people in Knox County. I am an experienced leader committed to prioritizing economic investment, facilitating infrastructure improvements and advocating for both public and private partnerships that invest in small businesses, our schools and the constituents in this community.

Most notably, I served a 4-year term as the Commissioner of District 1 (2016-2020). Additionally, I bring 25 years of economic and community development experience to the table, knowledge of the Commission and Knox County government. Plus a master's degree in public administration from Rutgers University and a bachelor's in political science from Tougaloo College with an earned leadership certification from NACO (National Association of County Officials).

During my tenure, I instigated key fiscal investments in District 1 schools, several arts and cultural organizations, and considerable fiscal investment in public health and education. Throughout my term, listening and responding to the needs of my constituents was my top priority.
Closing the housing and affordability gap will require a comprehensive housing strategy with local partners which includes developing new units, preserving existing affordable housing, expanding rental and utilities assistance, as well as addressing zoning, planning, and funding gaps.

My recommendations to address housing in district one would be to prioritize economic and community development, expand access to public transportation so people can be connected to jobs that pay a livable wage, and invest in case management services to prevent people from being evicted and becoming homeless.

The past three years Knox County has experienced significant growth in demographics, market shifts, and a housing boom. What’s needed in this district is access to capital, public-private partnerships, investment in small businesses, and improvement in public transportation and infrastructure. My priority is to support broad infrastructure improvements that advocate for a holistic community approach that invest in strong public schools, food security, access to affordable medical care, and improving accessibility to green spaces for constituents in District 1 and Knox County.
