Elections are about making our voices heard and holding our elected officials accountable. Every eligible voter should have access to the ballot. 22 states have already implemented election-day voter registration, including four of the New England states. Just north of my district, voters in New Hampshire can register and vote on election day. I have co-sponsored legislation that would allow election day registration to eligible voters who provide proof of identity/residency and swear an affidavit of their eligibility, which mirrors the process of registering to vote before election day. I represent a rural District and also believe we need to make sure our clerks have the state resources they need to handle election-day voter registration.
Climate change is not only the defining crisis of our time; it is the crisis that will define every other time after this one. As State Representative, I have continued to champion legislation that will increase funding for green projects in our towns, help reduce the health impacts of air, water, and land pollution, and create new green economy jobs to leave this planet a better place for our children. I also continue to advocate for a statewide approach to mitigate the impact of PFAS contamination, which impacts the vast majority of communities in MA but remains costly to remediate. I am proudly supporting legislation to expand access to clean energy, reduce pollution, green our transportation system, and bolster our climate workforce.
Access to affordable housing is a key component of building vibrant communities and is a top priority for me. The legislature recently passed a historic affordable housing bond bill, which includes significant investment and substantive policy changes that will improve affordable housing production. I continue to advocate for additional measures to protect renters and provide additional financial incentives to affordable housing developers while respecting our district’s rural character. Housing is only one piece of affordability. I also voted for tax relief for working families and small businesses in my first term and continue to champion local option tax relief for seniors in the House and reforms to the education funding formula.
Massachusetts faces a humanitarian crisis caused by decades of inaction in Washington. I continue to join my legislative colleagues in calling on Congress to address our broken immigration system. Massachusetts’ right to shelter law does not, and has never, provided services for people here without legal status. The law has given thousands of people, the vast majority of whom are long-time MA residents, an opportunity to get back on their feet. This system has been strained by recent in-migration. I have joined my colleagues on a bipartisan basis to provide additional resources to our shelter system and additional safeguards to control shelter spending, including opposing additional funding in light of local budget shortfalls.
It is no secret that our transportation system has been in disrepair. In my first term, the House has made historic investments to get Massachusetts moving again. Across the past two budgets, we have allocated significant resources to improve public transportation at the MBTA and our RTAs, as well as to provide municipalities with additional resources to repair local roads and bridges. Key for my district has been the additional $50M allocated for rural road improvements. I will continue to fight for additional resources to repair our local roads and bridges and to make much-needed investments in public transportation. When we do, our local economy, environment, public health, safety, and mobility all improve.
