Public schools, both the institution of public education and the teaching profession, are my north star. I will work diligently to protect public education in Idaho by working against legislation that seeks to misdirect funds to private schools or further reduce fragile school budgets. I will also work toward policies and initiatives that address the funding disparity for school buildings, the significant gap in special ed funding and the special ed workforce, as well as more dedicated funding to our vulnerable populations.
I am always working toward building coalitions and partnerships with other policy priorities, as well as continuing to build bridges and relationships with colleagues across the political aisle and across agencies.
The best preparation for public office has been two decades in public schools. As a public school teacher, I have learned the importance of gathering multiple perspectives, working with a diverse group of people toward a common goal, and focusing on what’s best for our students, their families, and our community. Working in public schools has anchored my resolve to advocate for vulnerable communities and walk with purpose. Being a teacher has also allowed me to develop characteristics and skills such as patience, tolerance, acceptance, finding common ground, and working to bring out the best in others. I use those skills every day at the Capitol.
Public schools continue to be under attack. There are very powerful, well-funded groups in this country that have invested a great deal of money to further advance the efforts to defund public education and privatize our public schools in Idaho. There are a significant number of legislators that seek to actualize these goals. It is imperative that we address these actions and protect public education from bad actors and the big corporate and partisan dollars that seek to see them crumble. I’m committed to continuing to strengthen the broad coalition that works in favor of public education and elevating the voices from the classrooms and communities around Idaho that can speak up for Idaho’s schools.
I would absolutely remove the criminal liability associated with our heinous abortion laws. We have more and more evidence of the catastrophe that has come about in our state after the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Doctors and medical professionals are not able to do their jobs and are afraid of being criminally charged and losing their license and livelihood for simply helping a pregnant patient in a medical emergency. We don’t have an OBGYN north of Coeur d’Alene, we have had to airlift numerous women to other states to receive emergency care for their pregnancies, and we are failing to attract doctors and medical residents to our state with untenable healthcare laws. It is crucial that we fix this law and protect women’s healthcare.
It is a privilege to represent my district and serve in the House of Representatives. And while the job is challenging and sometimes frustrating, I am continually heartened by the people in Idaho who want to work towards common goals, eliminate divisiveness, and do what is best for our state. I am deeply interested in those objectives and will work diligently towards that end.
