I am running for governor to build a better economy for everyone so our children and grandchildren can afford to live and thrive in Hawaiʻi.

Having led a business for 34 years and my involvement in community service, I will bring a practical, common sense solutions approach as Hawaiʻi's Governor. I have a proven record of getting things done and I am ready to get to work for the people of Hawaiʻi who need a leader who brings accountability and a sense of urgency to the many challenges we face. I am not doing this to make small kine change. Hawaiʻi deserves better and time is of the essence.
There are many issues to address, however, two of my top goals are affordable housing and improving our local economy. I will act to accelerate the development of affordable homes and work to enact policies that allow for expedited approval of construction permits. I will initiate my Affordable Housing Plan that consists of 1) Rent-to-Own, 2) Designated Workforce Housing and 3) Affordable Rental Communities.

To improve our local economy, I have a family-focused economic plan. I will use my business experience and entrepreneurial mindset to transform the current business climate.

The first act will be putting together a qualified team to serve in the Administration. This team will be a mix of those with institutional knowledge - because government solutions take an understanding of what exists - and non-government individuals who bring a can-do attitude to addressing the challenges ahead of us.
With 34 years of business experience, there is no question that I keep the customer in mind when providing the best service. As Governor, I will do the same with the understanding that I serve the people of Hawaiʻi. I will look first at the system and efficiency of the operation and use my business experience and entrepreneurial mindset to bring practical common sense solutions to resolve the problems that we have been talking about for decades.

I am a husband, father, ER doctor, and a public servant. I was elected to serve as a Member of the Hawaii House of Representatives from 2004 to 2008, the Hawaii Senate from 2008 to 2018 and as Hawaii’s 14th Lieutenant Governor in 2018. I’m running for Governor because Hawaii needs elected leaders we can trust — to tell us the truth, keep us safe and informed, to care about working families, and to be transparent and accountable to the people.
Building more housing that local families can afford and creating more economic opportunity that helps our workforce earn higher wages are two of my top priorities. My 10-point housing plan includes creating an Office of Emergency Housing to serve as a “one stop shop” to eliminate bureaucratic red-tape and using vacant state lands to build more affordable homes. My economic plan will focus on growing sustainable industries and forging partnerships with our educational institutions and the private sector to prepare Hawaii residents to compete economically for jobs.
My first official act will be aimed at taking significant and decisive action to reverse our housing crisis. I will immediately issue an executive order to all state and county housing agencies to speed up construction of affordable housing by eliminating red tape, streamlining processes and coordinating efforts to address the crisis.
I am a collaborative decision-maker who values hard work, can-do attitudes, and clear communicators. The success of any gubernatorial administration rests in large part on the men and women who lead the 18 state departments in Hawaii, so I will concentrate my efforts on selecting a top-notch cabinet of professionals who bring a similar sense of purpose and values that I will bring to the job of governor.

Forty years business experience in wood products. Inventory control, national and international wholesaling, ie, Exporting to Western Europe, importing from China and South America. Objective to source product, find solutions and solve problems quickly and effeciently. Get to the source of the product or problem asap every day, year after year. Soon you become an expert that many rely on. I am running because the world is slipping into political, social and economic chaos and Hawaii's isolation creates an opportunity to survive the destructive effects and become a world inspiration.
Food is Freedom! State sponsored and supported food box and grass to garden programs and planting 20-30 thousand fruit trees. Creating community resolve for achieving success through bringing people together in understanding but more importantly with community projects like picking up the island trash where everyone participates in some way, even only if in spirit. By creating a state web site showing the best plants to grow for particular areas. Showing how to make a food box and how to manage soil, crops, harvesting, preserving all of which will create a movement towards the establised goal.
Explaing to congress, counties and the people my objectives for becoming more independent and self suffecient. Presenting possibilities for success and pathways to achieving food growing goals. I want to talk about the personal and state wide advantages of being of service to ourselves and to others, first by example of working together and next by demonstrating success in meeting goals the goals of stablishing food boxes and growing food and becoming independnt. Sharing our experinces of success and looking to others for help we may need. Reaching out to others is a doorway to success.
I tend to assess a situation quickly, sensibly and intuitievely followed by seeking confirmation or criticism from others. I do not hold myself above anyone and listen to everyone who has something to offer. I do not make people feel bad about themselves or their ideas. People tend to feel safe to share their thoughts and ideas with me without being made to feel less than. I enjoy group discussions a brain storming sessions. I prefer sitting in circles rather than rows so everyone can see each other and everyone can feel equal. I even prefer sitting on cushions on the floor drinking tea.

Van Tanabe for Governor cause I’m the only candidate with real solutions and I even have a way to pay for my ideas without raising taxes. The other candidates just talk about the issues the people know what the issues are they face them daily. What we need from these people running for office are their ideas on how to solve Hawaii’s problems. For years politicians talk about improving education, providing affordable homes, helping the homeless, improving our economy, food sustainability, and energy independence Without solutions they’re just making empty promises again! Enough Talk ! WAHA !
Diversifying our economy. The pandemic showed us that we need other sources of revenue.Hawaii needs to get into the Marijuana/CBD industry and Solar Energy industry. The state must own and operate these entities to get the best return on our investment.Food Sustainability,As Governor the first thing would be to restore all the ancient fish ponds and build new ones if necessary. Next we will assist farmers and ranchers with low interest loans to acquire the necessary equipment to increase their production. Then we will offer tax incentives/credits to restaurants and markets to buy local first.ONO!
Legalize the Ohana Lottery. This lottery is for Hawaii residents only.No tourist and guarantee Hawaii people will win.You must also have a monthly income, for obvious reasons. You can spend $50 a month max.No bills neglected and everyone has the same odds.Hawaii has a workforce of 600K if half of these people spent the max of $50 we just created $15M for the state for every $5M generated we will call a $1M winner payable 100K for 10 years a $50K winner 2 $25K 6 $10K in all we just helped 10 families. This was for $5M we said that we could make $15M now just imagine if all 600K played.Do the math
The best way to make any decisions is to gather the most input and information from as many people as possible.Pass along the knowledge to the people they can make a informative decision. My plan is to legislate a bill allowing all citizens to take part in the decision making.Example should we legalize Marijuana? Listen to both sides then educating the people of the pros and cons put it on the ballot or take a state wide poll to see how everyone feels about it.We must have a 67/33 majority to pass.If we had this 20years ago we wouldn’t be paying or dealing with Mass Transit today.Just saying
