I believe it to be an honor to be the community representative for the City of Eudora. I believe it takes knowledge and commitment to understand what the city currently has and what the city needs. I love Eudora but it goes above just loving your community. Its about making the community better so that generations from now.
I don't feel as though policy limits a commissioner. The biggest hurdle in improving a city is funding. There is much that the citizens don't see or know. There are wants by everyone but how do we pay for it? So there is a lot of hurry up and wait that can be frustrating as a commissioner but also frustrating for the public. I have been waiting 8 years for a bridge to connect the north side of town to the south side of town. I am getting closer to getting this accomplished as are the other commissioners that sit with me. There are hurdles to achieve this goal that go above the city level however the biggest hurdle - money.
A commissioner should not be afraid to go out into the public and talk to those who are willing to share their opinions. A commissioner should also be looking for communications that are not face to face. What are people saying on Facebook? Each "complaint" has a desire to make things better. Everyone deserves to be heard. I also talk to our youth. Its amazing what you can learn from them too!
The commission in itself is an advocate for those who don't want to speak on a public forum. Do citizens come to our meetings? Not as much as I would like but that doesn't mean they don't have a say. I want to hear what they want. This doesn't mean it will happen, but I listen and who knows.... maybe what they want can happen.
I do feel their is a benefit to having district commissioners. Do I think that is necessary in Eudora? Maybe. We are a smaller city and it could be difficult to obtain candidates. I personally have lived in different parts of the city and with that experience, I make sure to keep all of the city in mind.

The commissioner is expected to attend every meeting, listen to the people they represent, vote on the policies that would best fit the city and oversee the city manager as he or she administers the affairs of the city.
The city commissioner votes on the policies. The policy is then put into effect for the city managers to enact and enforce.
The relationship the commissioner should have with the community is open to feed back. City commissioners need to listen to their constituents they represent. They need to be open to constructive criticisms without taking it personal and be able to rise above the personal attacks.
Commissioners have a big responsibility in regards to advocacy, they are voted into their position to be the voice of the community they serve.
I think for a town the size of Eudora the at-large commissioners to districts is the best fit. This way the city has a true professional, the city manager, running the city. The city manager will be the one enacting policy passed by the commissioners and the mayor can run the commissioners’ meetings.
