I have a wealth of experience within all levels of the district including PTA (PTA President @ Hall elementary). I have also participated in the Strategic Planning, INSIDE, and bond committees as well as the last 6 years as the District 5 trustee.
I would continue our safety protocols through the end of the 2020/2021 school year. I am hopeful that by the 2021/2022 school year, we will be further along in our vaccinations across the district and can relax our mask mandates. I would continue to advocate for online learning, for our families that have overlying health conditions.
We need to continue to provide counseling resources and check in with our students and faculty members. The pandemic has strained all, and we need to do a better job of letting our students and faculty know where they can turn to for help. After the Santa Fe shootings, we added additional counselors that address social and emotional concerns.
We will have to continually review our academic programs and possibly reduce the schedule for review in order to evaluate their effectiveness, and whether these programs are retained within the budget.
My part of the district did unique in that we are in a growth phase, so we will have to continually address this over the next couple of years. These will include school boundaries as well as the addition of new schools. Funding will continue to be an issue, as Austin continually shifts the burden from the state to the tax payer.

In a word: empathy. I’ve been that parent asking for help, only to be brushed aside. Our board must listen better. I’m a communicator by nature and by trade, with a background in enterprise technology to improve transparency and learning systems.
I support online learning, as long as the state funds it. Online learning must also address students’ social and emotional needs, including interactions with each other and more one-on-one time with teachers, and perhaps with qualified internship tutors, so that every child receives a high-quality education. No child should fall through the cracks.
Teachers and staff must be trained to recognize emotional issues in students and respond accordingly. Our children have struggled socially due to restrictions; we need to loosen them and bring these children back to normal. I want to see special efforts to address learning loss. CCISD employees should have expanded wellness programs to help them address their own difficulties caused by COVID.
I would improve long-range planning so we can budget for repairs and upgrades, as well as consistent staff raises and benefits. I support the return of letter grades for most students, and set grade-level reading lists. We need to conduct a top-down technology review to ensure systems support successful learning, and double down on keeping dollars in the classroom.
With uncertain tax revenues following the recession, as well as state and federal funding questions, we must target unnecessary expenditures to protect student-facing positions. Second is enrollment growth and aging facilities. CCISD must adopt a proactive, long-term approach to construction and renovation, budgeting for preventative maintenance. We must end CCISD’s bond-and-spend culture.
