Salem-Keizer School District Zone 7

Special districts in Oregon are formed to govern specific resources. Examples are people’s utility districts, library districts, sewer districts, irrigation districts, ports and cemetery districts. Some districts get revenue only from taxes. Others, such as water districts, get revenue from ratepayers. Others may combine the two sources. Each district is governed by a board of directors which is responsible for the operation of the district and its financial accountability. Your Experience/Qualificatons Occupational Background: Case Manager Educational Background: Masters of Sociology, Arizona State University Prior Governmental Experience: Cherriots - Board of Directors
County Marion County
Term 4 years
My career has been spent serving vulnerable families. This has included experience as an advocate for survivors of domestic violence, my current job as Operations Director at PCUN---Oregon’s farmworker union, where I have led disaster relief efforts in our community this past year, and as a Cherriots board member, where I have helped oversee a multimillion-dollar budget in service of working families in our region.

All of the families I have served are the kind who often have fewer opportunities, and often are impacted the worst by these achievement gaps in our schools. The one thing I have seen in all my positions is these families and their students are eager to thrive, but they urgently need help. I would ensure that as a school board member we prioritize investment in our students who are struggling.
This is important to me as a parent of a young daughter soon to enter school, and as someone who has spent the last year distributing PPE and other emergency resources to families devastated by the crises of the last several months, making sure our families feel welcomed and included with open arms by our district is very personal to me.

Our school board needs to take immediate steps to make our meetings more open and transparent to the public and go beyond passively receiving public input into actively going out into our community to seek it out.
Whether in my work helping manage a large organization and overseeing the distribution of emergency relief resources or on the Cherriots board helping lead a multimillion-dollar budget during a time of crisis, I have experience making sure that limited dollars are spent where they are most effective.

Not only would I bring this experience to our school board, but I would bring my passion as a parent to our elected officials in Oregon and beyond to demand the resources we need to reopen our school buildings fully to all students in a way that prioritizes health and safety.
