My two terms on the Beaverton School Board give me the needed experience to tackle the immense challenges our schools are facing right now. As a Board Member, I’ve championed increased support for struggling students, worked to create more inclusive and safe school environments, and helped add programs for college prep, music, and math so students have more diverse learning opportunities

As we resume in-person learning, my top priority is student and staff health and safety. We must ensure proper safety protocols are adhered to in order to keep our students, teachers, and classified staff healthy and prevent further disruptions in learning. We must also provide our children and teachers the resources they need to overcome any learning loss or setbacks caused by this pandemic. This is especially the case with students needing additional support to recover from this period of distance learning so they do not fall farther behind.
Creating an inclusive and equitable society that builds a stronger and just society for all
communities, as well as striving to expand access to education and opportunities to Black,
Indigenous, and people of color, are key values I bring and will continue to bring to my service
on the board. One of the primary roles I serve on the school board is being a voice for our
underserved students & families. My focus is on providing the resources needed to support at-risk children
for success, ensuring we meet the needs of students of color, and advocating for the necessary
social-emotional supports so all of our students have access to the help they need.
The Governor and leaders of the legislature have made or will make funds available for summer educational programs.
At the Federal level because of the passage of the latest stimulus plan, there will be an estimated $50 million dollars distributed to Beaverton School District. In the short term, this is good news, but long term this is not a sustainable funding source. This is one time money. If we hire teachers, it will be temporary because Beaverton School District will not have the funding to support them in the future. Beaverton School District must focus the dollars on the most at risk students in the district.

As an educator of 23 years, I have worked with a wide diversity of students who have struggled with their learning for one reason or another. It is important to have students who are struggling to work closely in small groups or even 1-1 with the teacher or aide, so learning is focused and retention is the greatest. Developing a comprehensive summer program is vitally important to help students build up their reading, writing, and math skills. Going into the next school year, the school boards, in conjunction with the superintendent and CFO, need to work to allocate monies for remediation classes either as a before or after school program or as a pull-out program where students receive targeted instruction in the areas they are struggling in. It will take the partnership of schools and families to work together to close the even wider achievement gap from the school closures.
With comprehensive distance learning, many parents have been disappointed by what has been taught like critical race theory, which is extremely divisive and creates unsafe learning environments, and comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) which is taught to our youngest students in kindergarten. With this realization among parents, as a school board member, I will continue to connect with parents, listen to their concerns, and make the best decisions possible when it comes to curriculum adoption with what is appropriate or not appropriate in the classroom, and in making or changing policy. There are also some things that need to be left to the parents to teach and not the schools. Schools need to be a safe haven for learning the basics and not the political or social ideologies of teachers or other staff.
BSD has received CARES ACT funds, and will be receiving $50.5 million dollars more from the $1.9 trillion bill congress passed, so this increases BSD's budget rather than having a loss. Also, Governor Brown has set aside money for school districts to do remediation programs. Beaverton School District will actually be slightly ahead of their biennium budget according to the last budget meeting from early March. If there is a shortfall, the school board, along with the superintendent and CFO, will work to reallocate monies to ensure students will be the first priority to get monies to the classroom for their learning and development. Students' education, health, and safety need to be the first items considered in budgets.
