Castleberry ISD Board of Trustees, Place 3

Trustees are elected to specific positions but represent their entire independent school district and have the following responsibilities mandated by State and Federal laws: select and employ the superintendent, manage public schools, establish operating policies, monitor expenses, adopt and approve a budget, and adopt employment policies. Additionally, they have the authority to set tax rates, levy and collect taxes, buy and sell property, exercise eminent domain, accept donations, charge fees, and call bond elections. Trustees elect their own officers: President or Chair, (Vice president or vice chair), Secretary and Treasurer.

Experience Incumbent candidate with 12 years of experience in education, counseling, and leadership serving students and families from various academic backgrounds. I am running to continue service and leadership for our incredible students! I am running to serve as a community bridge and strengthen educational experiences and opportunities for CISD students, families, and staff. My experience serving students and families from various academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, coupled with my passion and understanding of educational impact and leadership guide my confidence in this endeavor. I bring diversity of thought, perspective, experience, and strengths from a holistic district enhancement and student-centered lens.
In many ways: with informed decision making, utilizing partnerships, and remaining informed, involved, and educated on how we handle (and might improve) such matters. Most importantly, I would listen & lead. Being elected by the people, you have to know how to hold yourself accountable in all areas of the role. Parental concerns are valid and I respect them. My natural dispositions & leadership would certainly make me wonder how we could work more collaboratively when such concerns arise.
First, invite and seek more engagement for conversations with all stakeholders. CISD already distributes board meeting summaries post meetings. I've suggested we record school board meetings for public viewing (not just the meeting highlights). This idea was met with apprehension, which I respect, but I believe this could help move the needle in access. I also suggest educating all stakeholders about board actions in general. Our unanimous vote for the bond has been met with positivity.
I believe "loss" is in reference to attrition (but the counselor in me also recognizes loss of lives and grief). Related to attrition, under my term, student enrollment has increased every year, teacher turnover rate has decreased from 30% to 24%, our Board approved pay incentives as a way to attract and keep teachers, and we are now the top 4 starting teacher salary in the DFW (UEA). I ask questions and encourage conversation to contribute to solutions. We need to remain competitive.
Issues that face our district follow common national trends for districts similar to ours: 1) the need for more resources to support students, 2) the disparity and challenge of advancing high achieving students while equitably serving students who need more individualized and intentional supports, especially for our students who have special needs or face learning disabilities, 3) student achievement. I'd address these issues by remaining connected and informed of best practices and by considering approaches recommended to us that would strengthen and enhance our school district.
