Arlington ISD Board of Trustees, Place 2

Trustees are elected to specific positions but represent their entire independent school district and have the following responsibilities mandated by State and Federal laws: select and employ the superintendent, manage public schools, establish operating policies, monitor expenses, adopt and approve a budget, and adopt employment policies. Additionally, they have the authority to set tax rates, levy and collect taxes, buy and sell property, exercise eminent domain, accept donations, charge fees, and call bond elections. Trustees elect their own officers: President or Chair, (Vice president or vice chair), Secretary and Treasurer.

Occupation VP of Univ. Advancement and Professor of English
Education Bachelors in English, University of Texas; Masters in English, Texas Women’s University
Experience Over 30 years as an educator, 10 years in public shools and over 20 in seconday education with Tarant County College, UTA, Texas Wesleyan, and Arlington Baptist University d Univerit of Texas at Arlington. My son attended Arlington ISD K-12, where I served on PTA boards, Site Based Decision Making teams and various committees.
I am running for reelection because my work is not finished. I have served for six years and truly love my voluntary position in AISD. I look forward to working with our new superintendent, Dr. Matt Smith. My experience of volunteering in this district for over 18 years, 12 of which were serving as PTA president of several schools, on Site-Based Decision-Making teams, as a room mom, plus as President of the AISD Board for the past two years, gives me the experience and knowledge needed to help AISD continue to grow and thrive as a premier school district.
As a Trustee, I pride myself on always listening to parental concerns. A concerned parent is usually an involved parent, which I welcome. Inclusive practices are essential in education because every student deserves to learn in an atmosphere where they can develop and thrive as a student. Policies should be written with all students in mind, not just some. Policies protect the rights of all students to have equal access to the best education possible. The curriculum should reflect policies.
School board transparency refers to how well school boards maintain open and honest lines of communication with residents and stakeholders based on the decisions being made on behalf of the district. By providing avenues to access information digitally, residents can obtain materials and resources at their fingertips. But technology is only one way; communication is key. School boards must keep open lines of communication with district stakeholders to build strong relationships.
Student enrollment and teacher retention are areas AISD could improve upon. Hiring a superintendent with a proven track record of strengthening retention was a good step in the right direction for our board. We also strive to offer competitive salaries (four years in a row of 4% raises) and market our special programs on social media and local news outlets.
1) school safety — making sure our students, staff, and campus visitors are safe; (2) retaining our outstanding teachers and making sure they feel valued while also attracting qualified teachers to join our AISD family; and (3) offering as many opportunities as we can for our students and making sure that all students have access to these opportunities.
