Experience (300 characters max) I have served as a Board Director for the School District, the Sewer District, EWUA, the State WSF Tariff Commission, the Ferry Advisory Committee, and the County Board of Adjustment. That experience has included budget preparation, legislative representation in Olympia, and labor negotiations.
Since I moved to the Islands in 1974, I have believed that every citizen should participate in their community in any way possible. Many of our neighbors are involved in School programs, Church functions, Orcas Center, Little League and so forth. By chance, my participation has been principally in politics. In that regard, each organization, like the Fire District, needs to have a rotation of new directors with fresh ideas, new perspectives, and a willingness to question the status quo. I believe that no director should serve more than two terms. I believe, too, that the younger generation should step forward to fill those positions as the decisions made today will impact them and their children far more than the retired folks. Regrettably no younger person filed for this position, so I did so. Finally, I believe that EVERY election should offer the voters a choice. I am that choice; a new face with lots of experience and a willingness to ask tough questions.
First, there is a need to assure that the medical program of OIFR is sufficient to meet the needs of an aging community scattered around a 58 square mile island. Properties can be replaced. People cannot. Secondly, the costs of providing those services needs to be reasonable and sufficient. The District does not, likely, need any new facilities. Finally, recruitment and training must be continuous and include specialists to deal with catastrophic events.
All are important !!
Please refer to the first question on experience. That experience has resulted in nearly 50 man-years of participation with hundreds of community members during the 42 years that I have lived in Eastsound. There was one period when I was on four committees at the same time. That was nuts !! I keep an open mind on all issues. I listen, AND I speak my mind. I am not shy. I have never contributed to these organizations with any intent to benefit myself. My sole purpose is to serve the community and my neighbors. logo
