Thompson School District E
The Thompson R2-J School District serves the southeast part of Larimer County and parts of Weld and Boulder counties – the communities of Loveland, Berthoud, Masonville, Drake, portions of south Fort Collins and rural areas. The seven members of the Thompson School District Board are from geographic districts and are elected by Thompson School District voters at large for four year terms. Board members serve without pay. Regular meetings of the Board of Education are held at 6 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month in the Administration Building, 800 S. Taft Avenue in Loveland. Video recordings of the Board meetings are available on the website. Elections for Board of Education members are held in November of odd-numbered years.

The district is conducting public forums to learn the community's priorities and tasking the Master Plan Committee to propose facility efficiencies. I await that feedback before making specific decisions, however I believe solutions lie in creating efficiencies rather than cutting programs or eliminating opportunities for students. Boundaries, school consolidations, transportation, increased staffing ratios, staff reorganization all must be considered. No space here to address consequences.
I want our employees to help answer this. I support increasing compensation and favor another attempt to pass a mill levy to do so. I would like to be able to provide scholarships for staff continuing education. I believe it is imperative to treat teachers as professionals and respect their input. We can provide more opportunities for teacher mentors and collaboration, especially for new staff. The Board can advocate for statewide solutions, such as state tax credits for student loan payments.
I oppose school vouchers, Education Savings Accounts (ESA's), and any other method of diverting publuc dollars to private schools.
Yes. I believe the school year calendar is antiquated. Changes in start and end of day, longer school year, etc. need to be considered. Assessing students on competency in a subject area rather than hours in class is a more relevant measure today. We need to do a better job of advising students earlier in their school career so they can make informed choices about vocations, including decisions regarding college, technical training, military careers, etc.
The Board is looking to provide semi-annual reports to the community. Individually, Board members are writing blog posts on the district website. On a personal basis, I use Facebook and Twitter to inform and engage the community. I am always open to a personal meeting or phone conversation.
