What viable tactical steps are you proposing that would attract people to your city/town and keep current residents from leaving Long Island for other states?

What specifically will you do to increase the availability of low income/middle class housing, rental as well as ownership, in order to keep our young people from leaving and to attract other young people to our communities.

Since we are seeing the effects of climate change in the form of serious hurricanes and other weather events here and elsewhere in the country, what will you do to strengthen the infrastructure of our towns and cities to deal with the aftermath of such events?

High taxes, and the lack of affordable housing are a major obstacle, and a factor that is driving young people away from the Town of Hempstead. It also scares new residents away from purchasing a home. Why are our taxes so high? It's the high cost of corruption, lack of oversight and because Supervisor Santion's regime is placing themselves and their families' needs before you and yours. While we are over taxed, Supervisor Santino is raising the salaries of his supporters on the taxpayer dime. No wonder Supervisor Santino is fighting against real ethics reform and oversight like an independent inspector general proposed by a Republican Councilwoman King-Sweeney. Simply, if we want to keep our residents and attract new people, we can't afford Santino.
We must revitalize our downtown communities; specifically those by LIRR stations that offer a convenient commute east or west. We must develop walk able, safe communities that have easy access to restaurants, and playground. We need to offer an array of housing options that can allow people to stay in their community at different phases of their life allowing residents to age in place. Unfortunately Santino offers nothing, and is allowing our suburban way of life to be placed in jeopardy. The Town has zoning control and we can offer the families, young professionals, and senior citizens so much more. Long Island is one of the greatest places on earth to raise a family, I know because I am raising mine here.
I would propose working hand in hand with the federal and state government agencies to secure funding and engineering expertise. Long Island is surrounded by water and susceptible to flooding and serve hurricanes. We all can name streets still affected by Superstorm Sandy. I believe we can qualify for more federal and state grants to upgrade exsisting infrastuture, and to build new stations. By working collectivley we can secure our homes, and ensure taxes do not go up.

Putting Taxpayers First and ensuring Good Government are my two priorities as Supervisor. By cutting spending, reducing costs and saving tax dollars through innovation, I've turned an inherited $23.5 million operational budget deficit into a real $5 million surplus. In fact, two of Wall Street's top rating agencies - Standard & Poor's and Moody's Investor Services - have upgraded the town's financial outlook three different times to POSITIVE.

My strong, hand-on fiscal management is making government respect taxpayers each and every day. By doing more with less, America's largest township is living within a budget just like our middle class families and seniors. My Town of Hempstead administration is controlling costs and keeping an eye on the bottom line…all while offering top-notch municipal services for pennies on the tax dollar – the type that residents would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
Providing quality housing for people of all income levels must be an integral component in any neighborhood in Hempstead Town. I firmly believe that it is the town’s responsibility to help create a range of affordable housing choices – whether it is a traditional suburban home, a garden apartment, condos, townhomes or senior housing – for our workforce and neighbors of all ages. Because it’s only when communities have an affordable stock of housing options for the middle class will those areas thrive long into the future.

I have developed a record of supporting, voting for and overseeing multiple downtown development programs from downtown beautification to the Baldwin Revitalization Project, the revisioning centerpiece of the town's Urban Renewal Plan for Baldwin's business district. The plan was awarded a "Smart Growth" award by Vision Long Island for our efforts to bring sustainable and forward-looking development to downtown Baldwin.
I am proud to have the Sierra Club's endorsement in this campaign due to my commitment to protecting our environment. Under my leadership, Hempstead Town earned the unique distinction as being named a New York State Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) “Clean Energy Community." Through New York State’s Living with the Bay initiative that we partner with the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery on implementing, the town's Engineering and Conservation & Waterways Departments are looking to address a variety of flooding sources of the Mill River. My administration has also upgraded bulkheading. By installing storm water retrofits, drainage improvements and hardening our shoreline infrastructure, my administration partners with other governmental jurisdictions to improve the water quality stabilize the shoreline, restore natural wetlands and restore the ecological system to promote native aquatic species while also expanding the hydraulic surge capacity of our waterways. logo
