Every candidate in every Nassau County election for decades says something like: “We must reform the unjust property tax system to provide businesses and homeowners with a transparent, fair and clear assessment program going forward.” And it never happens. Other than repeating the above, what is your specific plan for fixing this system that continues a debt burden for Nassau County.

Integrity, honesty, trustworthiness are all qualities we expect from our politicians, yet Nassau County has had several elected officials that have faced criminal charges. What specifically will you do to implement accountability, transparency, checks and balances, and proper oversight? What concrete steps will you take to re-build the public’s trust?

Having the financial resources to live in Nassau County is becoming increasingly difficult. What strategic plans do you have on the county level to support and partner with the various municipalities to create more affordable housing for young adults, working families and seniors?

Redistricting and gerrymandering affect the choice of candidates that voters elect to represent them. What are your views for setting up an independent redistricting commission for Nassau County for the drawing of lines after the 2020 census? If you agree with setting up an independent redistricting commission, how would you make it a reality in Nassau County? If you are not for an independent redistricting commission, why not?

- “County Guaranty” Repeal: First and foremost, the “County Guaranty” needs to be repealed immediately. The “County Guaranty” places an unreasonable burden on Nassau to refund any taxes paid to schools, towns and special districts of the county which were later successfully grieved, even though the County never receives the money. This system has cost Nassau more than $1.5 Billion already. The “County Guaranty” can only be repealed through an act of the NYS Legislature. So, I ask– why are Nassau County Legislators not vehemently advocating for repeal?

- Margin of Error Implementation: If you speak to any property assessor with experience in the field, they will tell you that a property assessment is a qualitative art, not a quantitative science. Therefore, I advocate for assessment grievances to only be allowed when there is a margin of difference greater than 5% of original assessment.

- Term Limits: We need term limits for our county legislators. Serving in public office should be a privilege and not a lifetime employment opportunity.

- Creation of an Independent Anti-Corruption Officer: I join Nassau District Attorney Madeleine Singas in her call for the creation of an Independent Anti-Corruption officer. This will put in place a mechanism to evaluate the contracts issued and hold those decision makers accountable.

- Accountability: All too often, elected officials vote on issues in which they are not held accountable– they are not forced to provide a justification for their vote, it is difficult to retrieve records of their votes taken, and they often simply vote along party lines. I will provide a written justification for the votes I take in office on Facebook. This information will be made public for the voters to hold me accountable.

There is no long-term issue as pressing and urgent as keeping millennials right here on Long Island. Countless young people have left Nassau County and moved to Brooklyn, North Carolina, Texas and many other locations in search of good jobs, affordable rents and attractive cities. For young people between the ages of 22-30, there are two housing options on Long Island– live in their parent’s home or leave. We already plan affordable housing projects for senior citizens, so why not also for youths who can contribute to the growth of Nassau long-term? Designated rental units for youths should be built in communities with struggling downtowns or areas in Nassau who themselves have expressed urgency for revitalization. Farmingdale and Westbury are being revitalized by young people. Let’s give youths the same opportunity as seniors for affordable housing. Tax credits for builders providing youth housing and a discounted LIRR ticket to commute to NYC can keep many youths on Long Island.
I support a bipartisan solution to end gerrymandering. We need an independent commission chosen on the basis of their abilities, NOT their political affiliations. This would be accomplished by hiring an executive search firm to act independently in choosing the members of this commission. The sole requisite would be an individual's knowledge and skill to complete the fair redistricting of Nassau County with drawn boundaries, not influenced by either the Republicans or Democrats. Fairer legislative maps will mean more competitive elections, thus ensuring that our elected officials will be more accountable to the voters which they serve.
