Biographical Information

Please provide biographical information and explain why you are running for City office and relevant qualities and skills you would bring to the position.

What are the top 3 Priority Issues that the city should address and what actions would you take regarding each of them?

I am a lifelong resident of Walled Lake with 38 years experience on WL City Council. I have served as Mayor, a voting member of the council for the last four years. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Albion College and a Masters in Public Administration degree from Wayne State University. My education in governmental operations, my county government experience, and my city council experience has helped provide leadership during the mid-2000 economic downturn that caused havoc for many Michigan cities

Following a tumultuous two year period with political infighting, and troubled behavior and with no city manager, few candidates were willing to step up to volunteer their time as Council Members to develop resources or a financial plan, so I, along with the current council majority, were compelled to join one incumbent in 2009 and pledged a new vision of transparency and a new direction to bring stability back to Walled Lake and avert a predicted bankruptcy. The "reinvention of Walled Lake" is our motto and our "Road Map to Recovery" began with recovery, followed by stability.
1)The repair and replacement of deteriorating infrastructure throughout the city is clearly a priority issue and as a fiscal conservative I will lead the effort to spend before a crisis. After roads, sidewalks. or city structures collapse, spending always costs the taxpayer more. It makes good management sense to rehabilitate what you have as a city.

2)This council has done the hard work and made the hard decisions of maintaining a fiscally conservative balanced budget while providing excellent city service levels, however this can only continue with an experienced, well-educated management team cooperating at every department level. Our departments are fully staffed everyday. Re-electing Linda Ackley as Mayor and the incumbents to City Council will assure there will be no outsourcing of city services.

3)Business development and new growth in the city is a priority and can only be expected if the city remains stable. If re-elected as Mayor, I will continue my dedication to bringing growth and development to Walled Lake with my vision of making Walled Lake a destination location.
