County Treasurer DutiesThe County Treasurer serves as the County's Banker and Investment Officer. The Treasurer's primary responsibilities are to safeguard public funds and to collect and account for the revenue used to operate programs for County residents.The Treasurer is also responsible for the administration of the General Property Tax Laws & related duties, including:collection of delinquent real estate property taxesaccounting of tax collections of the 28 local townships, cities, and villagesagent of the Delinquent Tax Revolving Fund enabling the county to advance monies for delinquent taxes to the local units (minimizing the impact on their revenues)administration of Delinquent Tax Reversion involving title searches, property visits, court hearings, foreclosure and auction of propertiesadminister dog license programcollects and disburses hotel/motel accommodation taxestax certificationactive leader in the Calhoun County Land bank

Biographical Information

What in your background or experience makes you the best qualified candidate to fill this position?

I have experience as a Casino Gaming Commissioner, and as a Casino Board Member with the FireKeepers Casino in Calhoun County. I also have experience as an elected official as an elected Tribal Council member with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi in Athens, Michigan (Calhoun County). I have served on NHBP’s environmental advisory committee for the past 10 years and NHBP’s planning & land use committee for the past 8 years. I’m also a current member of NHBP’s indigenous rights committee and previously served on NHBP’s election board. Between 2016 and the end of 2023, I was the project chairman of Manoomin, a tribal initiative in state government that resulted in Manoomin (Wild Rice) becoming the State’s Official Native Grain.

What do you feel are the three most important duties of this position?

1. The County Treasurer serves as the county’s banker and chief investment officer. Protecting public funds is the most important responsibility, and serving as an active leader in the county’s land bank. 2. Collection of delinquent real estate property taxes and accounting of the tax collections of the 28 cities, townships, and villages. 3. Serving as an accountant for the revenues used to operate programs for county residents and an agent of the Delinquent Tax Revolving Fund: enabling the county to advance monies for delinquent taxes to the local units (minimizing the impact on their revenues) and administration of Delinquent Tax Reversion involving title searches, property visits, court hearings, foreclosure and auction of properties.
