Why are you running for this office?
Our current state of politics feels broken - I want to help fix it. There is too much time spent talking about issues that divide us, rather than solutions that will benefit all of us. Extreme voices are drowning out the voice of regular people. Government works best when people feel heard and they know it is working for them.
Our state government spends too much time on culture wars and power grabs. They are pushing laws that benefit corporations and mega donors. They are not improving the lives of everyday Tennesseans.
I decided to run for this office to make a difference in my community. I used to hope for change, but now I am working for change for every Tennessee family.
How has your background prepared you to serve in this office?
As a retired Distinguished Lecturer of Mathematics at University of Tennessee Knoxville, I know about leadership, helping students to succeed, and serving the public, for over three decades.
As an elected member of the University of Tennessee Faculty Senate, I have a track record of working with diverse groups to accomplish goals and tackle problems.
As a hiker of all 900 miles of trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, I know about hard work and determination, and a deep appreciation for our natural resources.
As a mother and grandmother, I share the family values of this community. We want our friends and family to be happy and healthy, to be loved and safe, and proud of who they are.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibilities of this office are writing and voting on state legislation, approving the annual state budget, and working on behalf of their district.
Members of the General Assembly represent the interests of their district. They assist their residents to find the government resources they need to solve problems and communicate their concerns to the state government.
Our state representatives should be transparent and accountable to their district, through newsletters and surveys, and town halls or other community meetings. They have a responsibility to understand issues from multiple viewpoints and to research and seek input from experts and residents before making decisions that impact their constituents.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I want to change the current political climate to one based on compassion, common sense and commitment. Compassion for our residents, common sense policies that most people can get behind, and a commitment to be accountable to our community.
I am willing and able to work with others to accomplish goals and will put in the time and effort to understand issues and create good policy. I have spent more than thirty years working with diverse populations to help people succeed and crafting solutions to benefit a majority of those affected.
I’m going to stand up for what’s right, and work to fix what is broken. I will communicate with respect and dignity and will work to listen to opposing viewpoints and find common ground.
What top three things will you prioritize if elected to this office?
I will work to expand access to affordable healthcare. Let’s improve healthcare access for thousands of expectant mothers, babies and seniors, with care closer to home.
I will work to protect our public schools and teachers. Public money spent on private education just doesn’t make fiscal sense; let’s concentrate public funds on public schools, who serve ALL in the community.
I will work to save our farmland and preserve what makes our rural areas special. Let’s support our farmers so they can continue to work and keep their land for generations, providing those green buffers that our community needs for our health and enjoyment.
What are the main points you want voters to remember about you and your candidacy?
I am a committed, compassionate, common sense choice to serve as the State Representative for East Knox County. It’s time for a fresh voice who empowers people over special interests. As a retired UT math teacher, I know what matters in our community: family farms and small businesses, working families, teachers who show up every day, and the nurses, firefighters, and law enforcement who keep us safe. I will listen to those in my community and take their dreams and concerns to Nashville, and will work to serve them. I’m going to stand up for what’s right, and work to make daily life more affordable. My focus areas are to expand affordable healthcare, protect our public schools, and save our farmland and rural areas.
