What do you see as the main responsibilities of a county school board member?

I believe the main responsibility of a school board member is to select the best candidate and support the mission of the district and the superintendent of schools. You must also serve as a liaison between your constituents and the superintendent. You need to ensure that the district is acting as good steward of the provided resources.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the Rutherford County Schools at this time?

Ensuring we have a school system that treats every student, teacher, and staff member as if it were their own family regardless of zip code. I have always made decisions whether in the classroom or administration, based on if I would believe this was right if tomorrow my children or I had to live with this rule or policy.

If elected, how would you address that challenge?

I would trust the person selected for the job to do what is in the best interest of the district. I would ensure there is a system in place to verify that the decisions made support our district's mission. Having many years of experience as both a classroom teacher and administrator, as well as a parent of 3, all employed in RCS's and grandparent of 5 students in our county schools I would diligently assess and monitor that resources are distributed equitably to all..

What do you see as the main responsibilities of a county school board member?

I see the main responsibility of a Rutherford County School Board member as helping set the direction for the school system and making sure decisions are made in the best interest of students, teachers, staff, and the community. That includes setting policies, approving the budget, and making sure taxpayer dollars are used wisely to support education. Another important role is working with the Director of Schools, Dr. Sullivan, to ensure the district is running effectively. I also believe school board members should listen to parents, staff, and community members so their voices are reflected in decisions. Overall, the goal is to support strong schools and create opportunities for every student to succeed.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the Rutherford County Schools at this time?

One of the biggest challenges facing Rutherford County Schools is managing rapid growth while ensuring enough space, resources, and funding for students. The district is expected to exceed 56,000 students by 2030, leading to overcrowded schools. To keep up, officials must build new schools, expand existing ones, and adjust school zones. These solutions bring added challenges. Construction and expansion are costly and require long-term planning and funding. Rezoning can disrupt families and communities. At the same time, the district must hire enough teachers, provide transportation, and maintain resources to support a growing population while preserving strong academic standards.

If elected, how would you address that challenge?

When elected, I would work with the other School Board members, Rutherford County Commission, Dr. Sullivan Director of Schools and District Leadership to make sure we are planning ahead for Rutherford County’s continued advancement. That means supporting long-term planning for new schools, expanding existing facilities when needed, and making sure we are using taxpayer dollars responsibly. I would also make it a priority to listen to families, teachers, and community members when decisions like rezoning are being considered so the process is as transparent and fair as possible. My goal would be to help ensure that even as our county grows, every student still has access to a quality learning environment and the support they need to succeed.

Why am I running? Today I’m running for School Board in Zone 1 because I believe our public schools deserve strong, thoughtful leadership that puts them first
About Me I’m a Tennessee native, graduate of MTSU, but most importantly, a mother community advocate, and lifelong supporter of public education. I am a mom on a mission, not a politician on a pedestal. I believe that public schools should have the resources and funds needed, and that all students should be protected and that we support our educators with transparency and communication

What do you see as the main responsibilities of a county school board member?

Rutherford County school board members are elected officials responsible for setting the district's overall educational policies, approving the annual budget, and overseeing the superintendent. Board members establish the strategic direction and goals for the school system, adopt curriculum standards, approve personnel policies, and ensure the district complies with state and federal education laws. Board members also represent the interests of their constituents by attending public meetings, engaging with community members, and acting as a liaison between the public and school administration. Members vote on major decisions like school construction projects, contract approvals, redistricting, & the adoption of new academic programs.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the Rutherford County Schools at this time?

Rutherford County Schools faces several significant challenges, including rapid population growth that strains classroom capacity and requires ongoing school construction to keep pace with demand. Teacher recruitment and retention remain difficult as salaries compete with neighboring districts and the cost of living rises. We also grapple with increasing student diversity, requiring expanded English language learner programs and special education services. Mental health support for students has grown in urgency post-pandemic, and managing school safety and security continues to demand resources and attention along with infrastructure issues and transportation shortages.

If elected, how would you address that challenge?

If elected, I will prioritize competitive teacher pay and retention incentives to keep quality educators in our classrooms. I will advocate for strategic school construction planning that stays ahead of our county's rapid growth. I will push for expanded mental health resources and counseling staff in every school, while supporting robust special education and English learner programs. I will champion intellectual freedom and ensure students have access to diverse ideas and perspectives. I will advocate to strengthen school safety measures, whether that fear comes from gun violence or policies that put their well being at risk.
