Why am I running? I am running for County Commission because I want to be an ear to listen to and a voice to speak for people in District 21. Smart growth, solid waste disposal, and competitive county salaries are all existing issues of concern. As commissioner, I will form a D21 Advisory Group to bring together the voices of people in our district to address these issues and future issues. I am COMMITTED to CONNECTING with CONSTITUENTS in Rutherford County’s District 21!
About Me I am Dr. Laura Clark, educator, mom, grandmother, native Tennessean, and a Rutherford County resident since 2006. I seek to represent District 21 on the Rutherford County Commission, and honored to be supported by Commissioner Chantho Sourinho who has served our district since 2010. I’ve been a teacher, a principal, a professor, a college administrator, a board member of the American Democracy Project as well as a member of the Rutherford Neighborhood Alliance and of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Murfreesboro. Serving my community is of utmost importance to me, but the source of my greatest joy is my family. With their support, I am ready to continue serving my community and then, if elected, being the voice of District 21!

What do you see as the main responsibilities of a county commissioner?

The two main responsibilities of a country commissioner are 1) to listen to and be responsive to constituents' questions and concerns, and 2) to be knowledgeable enough about the matters that will come before the commission to cast an informed vote.

What are two goals you would like to accomplish during your term of office?

I would like to 1) create an effective system for residents of District 21 to communicate with and feel connected to county government, and I would like to 2) bring to a decisive end any further plans to expand Middle Point Landfill, while expanding safe, alternative, innovative solutions to waste disposal in RuCo.

How would you accomplish those goals?

I will 1) form a D21 Advisory Council of residents of District 21 to be a collective voice communicating with me and representing opinions and concerns of those who live in D21, and 2) I will work with county, city and state governments and agencies to retain the Jackson Law (requiring local voices in decisions about landfills), to end the contract with Republic Services and to work with local governments and private companies to expand affordable, alternative solutions to solid waste disposal for Rutherford County.

What do you see as the main responsibilities of a county commissioner?

I believe a county commissioner’s job is to make sure county government stays focused on the basic services people count on and that taxpayer dollars are spent carefully and responsibly. That includes solid budgeting, maintaining infrastructure, and making sure county services keep up with everyday needs. As Rutherford County continues to grow, commissioners also need to think ahead so roads, services, and development keep pace in a practical way. Just as important, a commissioner should listen to residents, understand the different needs across the district, and make decisions that reflect both current needs and long-term responsibility.

What are two goals you would like to accomplish during your term of office?

1. Support practical long-term planning so roads, infrastructure, and county services keep pace with growth.

2. Improve communication so residents better understand major county decisions before important votes are made.

How would you accomplish those goals?

I will time to review proposals and support decisions that make sense not just for today, but for the county’s future.

I’d utlize my platforms to share information to give our community a chance to understand issues before major decisions are made.
