My name is Chauncy Johnson, I'm 25 years old. I was raised in Colorado Springs, CO, all my life. Raised by my great- grandparents, they taught me great values: have dreams but be realistic with them! I learned that life is beneficial as long as you live with love and respect. As I marched in protest for lives not just dying across the country, but also here at home, it led me to work at the state capitol for multiple legislators. Now I want to take all I have learned at the capital to run for city council. We all want a thriving local economy, safe neighborhoods, and quality transportation. No matter the struggle, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. However, we must fight for that light to continue a bright future for this district. So, let's deliver one great opportunity at a time!
What are your top priorities for the office and how would you integrate them in your first 100 days?
My top priorities are public safety, housing, and transportation. I will integrate these into my 100 days by working with my colleagues to find common ground on what can be moved on quickly, and what needs time for that priority to be a reality. Also look at local non-profits to partner with to achieve set goals.
What will you do to support a vibrant economy?
Work to raise the minimum wage for citizens in Colorado Springs by lowering the sales tax for a small duration or raising the income tax on people making a certain amount of money or small duration of time. As well finding ways to connect with public educational leaders and non-profits to ensure that we are looking at people within Colorado Springs and retaining their talent, as well offer other trade jobs and opportunities for young people not in college.
How will you address the housing affordability crisis and the needs of the unhoused?
I would address affordable housing by ensuring the unites are actually affordable, and not just attainable. As well work with nonprofits, community and developers to help come to an agreement outlining what good development looks like for said development in said neighborhood. Finally, I would work to help build different types of housing outside of single family, so then we can have condos, mutli-family, and other things that allow our housing stock to grow in its diversity. I do think when it comes to our unhoused community, we need more shelters to help citizens who may be facing this challenge, as well work with nonprofits like the pikes' pike continuum of care and other orgs to expand or innovate current resources.
What factors will guide your financial and budgeting decisions?
I would guide my financial and budgeting decisions by assessing the input from citizens first and see where there is alignment of common ground, as well think about the long-term reward on the financial or budgetary action for citizens. I also think with the newly applied retail marijuana tax, there is opportunity to budget a little different and innovative.
Why do you want to serve now?
I would say is my youth. This will help bring a different perspective given the average age of residents are 36, as well believe my experience working as an intern & senior legislative aide to multiple state legislators. Which will allow the city to work better with the state in its relationship with one another. I also believe that experience has allowed me to learn to work to pass ordinance and know the basics of city council gong forward into this role
What changes, if any, would you like to see concerning how the city is run?
If there are any changes, I would make in running the city is having the city council sits on the utilities board. I believe this will help the council focus in the main priority to focus on what future ordnances are needed
