Describe the education, experience, and skills that qualify you for this office.
I have a BA in English and graduate degrees and experience in teaching and journalism, as well as 44 years residence in downtown Cheyenne, experience as a business owner, experience as a reporter and advocate in Wyoming state government. As a reporter and as lobbyist (for the League of Women Voters of Wyoming), I have participated in the legislative process as an objective observer and advocate for good government proposals.
I have served children, families and professionals as a board member and volunteer. I also served everyone in western Laramie County as a school trustee, an elected non-partisan.
I know the importance of listening to those I serve and working with diverse groups to find solutions.
Given the rise in residential property values and subsequent increase in property taxes, what tax structure changes would you support?
I support residential tax relief that targets that relief based on need, rather than across-the-board cuts to the whole tax structure. I support a system that is based on market values. I also support a system that considers -- and compensates as much as possible -- the inevitable loss of revenue to schools and local governments.
What changes to Wyoming's abortion laws would you support or oppose?
I would support a return to the restrictions that were in place in 2020.
How much authority should the legislature exert over ordinances at the city and county level?
Legislators should resist the temptation to override local ordinances and land use regulations for favored parties who otherwise are clearly subject to those local authorities. Those authorities are typically elected, and their regulations are imposed in the general interest of the community.
Lawmakers could take better note of home rule.
Parties who are not subject to the local regulation, as matter of state law or Constitution, (e.g., state trust lands) should take note of local restrictions. They are not subject to those restrictions but should try to accommodate them as much as possible in the course of their legal activities.
Do you support adopting an online voter registration system or automatic voter registration when applying for a Wyoming driver’s license? Why or why not?
Absolutely!!! We are one of only eight states that lack an online option for registration. We could use their ideas to set up an online system for ourselves.
I support making registration and voting by eligible individuals as free and fair as possible. Expression of the public will -- through voting -- is the basis of our representative form of government. I support removing obstacles that don't improve integrity and safety.
We know online registrations can be secure. We know every registration is digitized anyway, and insisting on paper just introduces an extra step that can include errors. We know an online process removes logistical obstacles for thousands of eligible Wyoming voters.
Do it.
