If elected, what are your top 3 priorities?

1. Tackling San Diego’s Housing and Homelessness Crisis: As a Chief Deputy City Attorney who’s opened emergency homeless shelters, I’m best prepared to address this crisis. I’ve released plans to launch the Housing Protection Unit to ensure every San Diegan has access to vital safe and affordable housing.

2. Keeping San Diego Safe: I am dedicated to enhancing public safety by being smart on crime, expanding the work of the Gun Violence Prevention Unit and the Family Justice Center.

3. Protecting Taxpayers: As City Attorney, I’ll put the law first and be a watchdog for taxpayers to ensure ethical and effective use of taxpayer month. I’ll strengthen the Consumer Protection Unit to protect consumers from financial scams.

Give at least example of how you would use your time in this office to position the City to meet a long-term challenge, while still responding to immediate crises.

As a Chief Deputy City Attorney who has opened emergency homeless shelters and advises the Council on successful homeless intervention strategies, I am the only candidate prepared to tackle this issue that plagues San Diego.

It’s clear that housing instability, housing costs, and homelessness are linked and require immediate attention. One of my first actions to address this crisis would be to establish the Housing Protection Unit. This initiative would not only provide immediate legal support to those facing unlawful evictions but also work towards preserving existing housing. By safeguarding tenants and ensuring the lawful use of residential units, we can prevent homelessness among vulnerable populations, specifically seniors and those on fixed incomes.

But addressing this crisis isn't just about providing short-term solutions, like shelters and services. My office would also advise the City on long-term legal strategies and work closely on policy reforms aimed at increasing the supply of housing in San Diego. This includes working with city planners, developers, and community organizations to remove legal barriers to affordable housing development, improving adoption and enforcement of City laws regulating housing, and enforcing ordinances designed to improve access to affordable housing.

Tackling homelessness also means addressing its underlying causes, including mental health issues and addiction. My office would vigorously enforce laws against people who prey on the most vulnerable among us and would provide legal support for policies that provide comprehensive services to the homeless, including mental health care, substance abuse treatment, and job training programs. This holistic approach is needed to shelter people now but also to provide people with the tools and support needed to help them achieve long-term stability and housing.

If elected, what are your top 3 priorities?

- Fair and effective enforcement of the laws to keep San Diego safe and protect the rights of all San Diegans -Defending reproductive freedom - Protecting San Diegans from gun violence

Give at least example of how you would use your time in this office to position the City to meet a long-term challenge, while still responding to immediate crises.

I am proud to have secured $2 million dollars for the San Diego City Attorney’s office to create a Regional Gun Violence Response Task Force to assist cities throughout our region with implementing California’s red flag laws. Gun Violence Restraining Orders have been used in California to get guns out of the hands of those who are an immediate danger to themselves or others. Since red flag laws were created in California, they have been credited with preventing at least 58 potential mass shootings. Leading the gun violence response unit will enable law enforcement to respond quickly to remove weapons when someone poses an immediate danger. The Task Force will help the San Diego region reduce gun violence long-term by providing other cities with the training and resources they need to implement their own gun violence response units.
