Why are you running for a board seat? What strengths or talents especially qualify you for that role?

I was appointed to this board, and an appointed seat is something you earn, not something you keep by default. I am running because voters should decide whether I stay.

I spent twenty years in corporate operations managing budgets and teams, and I work now on literacy with schools across West Michigan. That combination matters. I read financial reports closely enough to catch what does not add up, and I found discrepancies in our sinking fund reporting and made them public. I also know what strong reading instruction looks like in a classroom, not just what a policy says it should look like.

What are the most positive characteristics or qualities of the school district — ones that support student academic achievement and personal development? What are the opportunities for improvement?

Comstock is small enough that students are known. Staff can tell you which child had a hard week and why, and that is not something a larger district can buy. Our STEM Academy gives families a real choice inside their own district.

The opportunity is early literacy. Michigan's literacy laws raised the bar, and compliance is not the same as every third grader reading. I want building level data reviewed on a schedule, not once a year.

The second is financial transparency. I caught reporting discrepancies in our sinking fund. That should not depend on one trustee reading closely.

What actions will you take to promote further parental or community involvement in schools?

Publish meeting materials early and in plain language. A packet posted the night before is technically public and functionally private. I will push for a short, readable summary of what the board is deciding and why, out in time for a parent to respond.

Ask before deciding. Choices like the CELA relocation affect families directly, and their input belongs at the front of the process, not the end.

Close the loop on public comment. When someone speaks, the district should report back on what was done with it.

And show up. Board members should be visible in the buildings, not only behind the table.

What are the most important safety issues facing our schools? How should the board address them?

Building conditions, student mental health, and emergency communication with families.

Facilities are a safety issue, not just maintenance. Secure entries and working systems are the baseline, and sinking fund dollars need to be tracked honestly against them.

Mental health support is the other half. Prevention costs less than response and depends on having enough staff to catch a struggling student early.

Parents raise phones as a safety concern. I voted for the policy and I understand the worry. In a real emergency, the answer is a district that reaches families fast and accurately.

The board should require an annual safety review, not w
