MOTIVATION & QUALIFICATIONS: Why are you seeking a seat on the Board of Education? What skills, experiences, and perspectives will you bring to the role?
I am seeking the opportunity to serve on the Board of Education for Allegany County Public Schools because I believe an educator’s perspective will strengthen the school system and benefit our students, families, employees, and community. With more than 25 years of experience in PK-12 and higher education as a teacher, school administrator, and college professor, I have a deep understanding of how decisions affect our schools.
ROLES: What do you see as the role of parents, teachers, and Board members in the educational system in our County? How will you ensure transparency and resolve disputes?
A strong school system requires clear communication and meaningful collaboration among Board members, educators, families, students, and community partners. I will ensure stakeholders are included in the decision-making process and informed when changes are being implemented within the school system. When challenges arise, I will listen to all parties, seek to understand all perspectives, and work collaboratively to resolve issues with solutions that best support students and all involved.
STAFFING & RETENTION: What actions will you take to support educational staff, including policies related to recruitment, hiring, and retention of staff?
The Allegany County Public School System has outstanding professionals serving the district, and their voices deserve to be heard. I will work to ensure staff are heard, supported, and involved in policymaking. They understand the students' needs and know what happens in the school setting. Gathering their input is essential. Providing support and mentoring programs that meet the specific needs of new employees and continue for as long as needed will help attract and retain staff.
TECHNOLOGY: What is your position on the use of technology as an educational tool? Also, what is your position on the presence and use of students' personal electronic devices in school?
Schools must provide opportunities for students to keep pace with society, and technology is a key to achieving that. As society continues to shift with new technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI), we need to keep our students informed about how to use these tools in a positive, productive way. Students’ personal electronic devices should not disrupt instruction or be used in a harmful way. They should be put away during instructional time unless incorporated as educational tools.
