Coon Rapids City Council Member Ward 2 Choose 1

As local legislators who sometimes have executive power, council members can propose ordinances, set administrative policy, and authorize the budget proposed by the mayor. They oversee all city activities, including city services, programs, licensing, and public safety. Mayoral appointments to city government typically require council approval.Voting in local elections is important - learn more here: Why Vote for City CouncilA candidate forum for this race is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaS7vBYL1o4. Why are you the best candidate for this position? (750 characters)

I believe I am the best candidate for this position because of my experience and character. I have eight years of government budget experience where I oversee millions (and billions) of taxpayer money, listen to various stakeholders, mediate negotiations, and also price out and draft legislation. I also am out in my community as a City Sustainability Commission member and a volunteer at the Crooked Lake Library. I am optimistic and love talking to anyone about how to make our community better, and will do whatever I can to work with anyone. Public service is something I love to do every day and I will bring that cheerful perspective to our City Council. This is about representing our neighbors and the individual dignity we all have.

If elected, what will your top three priorities be and why? (500 characters)

Top issues I discuss with voters include affordability in Coon Rapids, infrastructure/sustainability needs, and public safety. I've done my best to talk to voters about how Coon Rapids has the opportunity to turn the page and think about what the next 20 to 40 years will look like for the city, along with the steps we need to take to make sure no one is left behind. Our city is one of the few middle-class suburbs left in the metro, and I want to ensure we have world class services.

How do you plan to engage with and represent all members of our diverse community?(500 characters)

I want to show up everywhere in town. Having a presence each day in the community is one step to build bridges and connect people who might not always understand each other. It doesn’t matter where you grew up, who you love, what your job, religion, gender identity, or race is – you belong here and are a part of the City’s story since Coon Rapids is for everyone. I am committed and care about being accessible to everyone since we all deserve to live in a community that tolerates everyone.

What steps will you take to ensure transparency and accountability in city government? (500 characters)

I believe listening with compassion, communicating clearly, and being available to voters every day are three concrete ways to deliver transparency and accountability. Government can be complicated and people are busy enough managing their own lives. My goal as a public servant is to take that stress away and be a resource to help with concerns, while keeping citizens informed about Council activities. Customer service is a key part of elected office and I aim to be approachable to everyone.

We normal citizens need a nonpartisan voice with common sense who will engage the citizens when big issues arise. We know Coon Rapids is getting older, but we must treat our City Budget the same as a household budget. There is no time for pet projects, they’re destroying us financially. I’m also running against an agenda. The Met Council is pushing Coon Rapids to add 10000+ more people by 2040. This will cause a massive tax increase to overhaul our infrastructure. They will do this with low income/high density apartment buildings, like 10 story apartments. I am firmly against this overreach and growth agenda. I stand for keeping natural lands and wildlife, low taxes, senior housing, parks, kids, families, pets, and 1st responders.

If elected, what will your top three priorities be and why? (500 characters)

Stop the Met Council 2040 agenda. Adding 10k+ people to C.R. will require an infrastructure overhaul and all that comes with it.

Find developers who can rehabilitate or build new housing or commercial buildings on our existing vacant and rundown lots which increases productivity, commerce, and revenue.

Crunch the budget and locate more companies to bid on projects. C.R. is lucky to have 2 bids for a project. This drives up costs. More bids mean more competition means less cost (Taxes)

How do you plan to engage with and represent all members of our diverse community?(500 characters)

The City Council is supposed to be nonpartisan because the role deals with city expenditures, roads, water, streets, parks, recreation, and commerce. I plan to have a webpage that is interactive for only Ward 2 citizens. This will allow me to vote the way the citizens want. When door knocking, I ask the citizens to engage on this upcoming website (if elected) so their voice can be heard, and I vote according to what the people want. We are supposed to represent the people, not the other way arou

What steps will you take to ensure transparency and accountability in city government? (500 characters)

Having an interactive, user-friendly website will allow the citizens of Ward 2 to be up to date on all that is happening. I will be listing the city council agendas for meetings and workshops and provide easy links to various city departments such as the building commission and links to tell us where the pothole in the road is located. I believe we need someone who wants to keep the citizens engaged and tries to do so. The Internet makes it easy to do so.
