EDUCATION: How do you evaluate Michigan’s current education system in terms of quality, funding, the teacher workforce and standardized testing? What changes, if any, would you propose or support?
I’m proud to be a substitute teacher with EDUStaff and Clarkston Community Schools. Working with students, I have firsthand experience of what students are facing. I support initiatives promoting knowledge in skilled trades to jump-start their education as trade schools increase in popularity and Michigan faces the “Toolbelt generation”. Additionally, I am interested in investigating the potential of a pilot program that would allow contract negotiations between districts, supporting students' educational opportunity while protecting districts from decline.
ECONOMY: What policy initiatives do you support for residents to earn a living wage and address the overall question of affordability across Michigan?
Affordability is a persistent problem for Michiganders in a tumultuous U.S economy, but legislators can lessen the strain. On a broad scale, I want to take advantage of the momentum of auto insurance reforms. I support bipartisan legislation to implement a 10% reduction on insurance rates for first time and renewed auto insurance buyers’ policy. On a local scale, I support farm and business investments, like the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Farm to Family Program. Designed to promote agri-food systems, it increases access to fresh, locally grown produce all while pursuing lower costs for the consumer.
ENVIRONMENT/ENERGY: How would you approach ensuring energy reliability, consumer affordability, and environmental protection in Michigan?
I am a proud supporter of rooftop solar and the MI Solar for All program. I would love to see greater access to privately owned solar, where homeowners can power their own home and participate in buyback programs, selling their excess summertime energy via outflow credit back to the power company, recouping their investment. Initiatives like these create jobs and protect the consumer from excessive energy bills by reducing costs on their utilities and empowering the homeowner. I also support a temporary moratorium on data centers until every community has guaranteed long-term protections from increased utility costs.
IMMIGRATION: What is your position on due process, First Amendment, and Fourth Amendment rights for all Michigan residents, including noncitizens, and what changes, if any, would you support?
I absolutely support due process, including the first and fourth amendments. I’m a regular volunteer at a local farm in Clarkston that grows and donates produce to communities in need. This year, many of our produce will go to CAFE, a local organization that supports food security for families whose breadwinners were suddenly detained by ICE. Understanding the impacts left behind when we lose due process, I support legislation such as SB 508 that has broad support in Michigan, requiring judicial warrants when carrying out Immigration enforcement in churches and schools, and promoting safety in our community.
