EDUCATION: How do you evaluate Michigan’s current education system in terms of quality, funding, the teacher workforce and standardized testing? What changes, if any, would you propose or support?

I absolutely support public education. However, as a retired teacher I am very concerned about our educational system. For too long, non-educators have made policy and curriculum decisions which are not supported by child development data, educational research, or test scores. I support more diversity in the curriculum and delivery options which would accommodate the specific needs of each learner. With such dependance on standardized test scores we have reduced education to a cookie cutter approach where all students are instructed in the same way and at the same pace, instead of responding to developmental needs of each learner.

ECONOMY: What policy initiatives do you support for residents to earn a living wage and address the overall question of affordability across Michigan?

Increase the minimum wage. Revisit the Headly Act and property tax reform. Revise our income tax structure to be more equitable. Provide a diverse educational system which supports all career paths and training programs.

ENVIRONMENT/ENERGY: How would you approach ensuring energy reliability, consumer affordability, and environmental protection in Michigan?

Continued innovation in alternative energy sources. Targeted goals for renewable energy. Local control of development which would include assistance from our state government by providing research and data, prototype language and general guidance. Any new development should be required to provide a bond or escrow account with funds sufficient for any clean-up or rehabilitation of the property. Strict and enforceable fines for polluters, including chemical, sound and light pollution. Also any electrical charge that might be transferred to unintended targets.

IMMIGRATION: What is your position on due process, First Amendment, and Fourth Amendment rights for all Michigan residents, including noncitizens, and what changes, if any, would you support?

We must provide due process for every person, regardless of citizenship status. Law enforcement, including ICE agents, must have probable cause and proper warrants to detain and/or questions subjects. We have the Constitutional protections in place; we need to follow them. If there are noncitizens without legal status who are committing crimes, they can be prosecuted properly within our laws.
