Harbor Springs Public Schools LSD Board Member Choose 3

From the Michigan Association of School Boards (masb.org): The primary function of the board of education is to oversee the education of students in the community. Educational programs conducted at the elementary, middle and high school levels are most familiar. Many local and intermediate school districts also operate preschool and adult education programs for large numbers of people. Under Michigan law, a board of education has the ultimate responsibility for school district operations. Among other things, the Revised School Code gives each board of education general powers to: Educate students. Provide for the safety and welfare of students. Acquire and dispose of school property. Determine matters relating to school employees and contractors. Control the expenditure and receipt of school funds. Make joint agreements and cooperative arrangements. Specific provisions in the Revised School Code also assign responsibilities to school boards in areas such as: Setting the curricula and courses taught in the schools. Employing a superintendent, other administrators, teachers and support personnel. Levying local taxes to run the schools and adopting a budget. Deciding whether or not to furnish transportation for pupils. Negotiating with employee unions regarding salaries and other conditions of employment.

How will you be an asset to your community in this position?

I have been an educator in higher education for the last twenty years, including the last ten in Northern Michigan. My wife and I have two children in the Harbor Springs Public Schools and care a great deal about the education our children are receiving. Locally, I am a parishioner at Holy Childhood, and have coached robotics, baseball and softball for many years. I have also just concluded three years of service with the Harbor Springs Little League Board.

I am a product of public education myself and believe that it is a community effort to raise the next generation of citizens, leaders and contributors to society. I want to make sure that Harbor Springs holds onto its successes while making progress in areas where we want to do better.

How will you address the priority issues facing your community in this position?

First, I want to make sure that teaching and learning is at the center of all we do. That means, to me, ensuring that the environment is safe and secure, we have the best training and development to support our faculty, that coaches and leaders outside the classroom uphold the proper standards and that students have access to the learning which suits them best.

Second, I want to be a faithful steward of the community's resources. The Board needs to strike the right balance between "saving for a rainy day" which is quite prudent while also strategically deploying its resources to support efforts at meeting our most important goals.

Lastly, I have been impressed over the last decade at how the schools serve as one of the key pillars of our community. They are a place where the community gathers to celebrate at events like athletic contests, drama productions, commencement activities, band concerts, the Halloween parade and Field Day.

How will you stay informed about your constituents’ interests and concerns?

I am around the schools quite a bit on a weekly basis and am always available to speak over the telephone or over email.
