A Probate Judge serves a four-year term and has jurisdiction over marriage licenses, estates of deceased persons, guardianships of incompetents, conservatorships of estates of minors and incompetents, minor settlements under $25,000 and involuntary commitments to institutions for mentally ill and/or chemically dependent persons. What do you see as the most critical issues for the county's judicial system?
One of the most critical issues facing Jasper County’s judicial system is ensuring our courts remain efficient, accessible, and focused on serving people with fairness and respect. Families often come before Probate Court during difficult times involving grief, guardianship, or mental health matters. The court must operate with professionalism and compassion. Modernization is also important, including improved technology, organized records, and efficient processes that reduce delays and improve public service. Just as important is maintaining public trust by treating every person with dignity, patience, integrity, and impartiality under the law.
What are important principles for a Probate Judge to uphold?
A probate judge should uphold the principles of fairness, integrity, compassion, professionalism, and respect for the law. People often come before Probate Court during emotional and difficult times involving the loss of a loved one, guardianship matters, mental health concerns, or family disputes. A judge must be patient, impartial, and committed to treating every person with dignity and respect. Strong organizational and decision-making skills are also important to ensure the court operates efficiently, responsibly, and fairly while maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in the judicial system.
If elected, what changes, if any, would you enact in the Office of Probate Judge?
If elected, my focus would be on continuing to strengthen the Probate Court through professionalism, efficiency, accessibility, and compassionate public service. I would work closely with county leadership and staff to support updated technology, improved organization of records, and efficient office operations that help better serve the public. I also believe in creating a respectful and welcoming environment where citizens feel heard and treated with dignity during often difficult times. My goal would be to lead with integrity, fairness, sound decision-making, and responsible management while ensuring the office operates as effectively and professionally as possible.
