In addition, the commissioner collects information about acreage and the location of land and the terms in which land can be purchased from landowner and farmers. What experiences qualify you to serve as Agriculture Commissioner?
I’m a full time fourth generation farmer. I’ve been required to do many jobs; CEO, CFO, HR,PR, mechanic, truck driver, machine operator, food safety officer, accountant, bookkeeper, vet to my cows, and salesman among other things. I have spearheaded a bill through the general assembly, the 216 Farm Aid Fund, testified before a congressional hearing with Senator Tim Scott. I’ve lobbied for farmers in Washington. I’ve flown to Canada and recruited an international buyer on my own to come to SC, which now has become a $5 Million annual revenue producer for our state. I know what problems we face and how to fix them because I live it every day. I am not a politician but the farmer in the race trying to help save our industry and state.
What will be your top priority for action if elected?
My top priority is to return to local. To provide market access to consumers, where they can find locally sourced, heathy meat, fruits, and vegetables and where farmers can have better access to sell their products to those consumers and create sustainable agriculture for our state.
What steps can be taken to ensure farmers have access to adequate, safe water for their crops and livestock while meeting the demand for household and industrial use?
The major step is to protect farmers and consumers as “essential”users of water, which is how they are currently listed and not allow an outside source to be on that same level, such as data centers which are being discussed throughout the state and could pose a risk to water supply long term.
