What would be your top three priorities if elected?
My top three legislative priorities in the Assembly include
1) ensuring that everyone in New York has access to comprehensive, affordable health and mental health care close to home as well as making public health decisions more transparent and understandable;
2) ensuring access to affordable broadband so we can learn and work in our communities; and
3) making sure that Upstate New York is a place with opportunities where people can afford to and want to live, work, and raise their families.
What do you think would be the most beneficial policies to address climate change and the damage caused by climate change in NYS?
Clean water, healthy soil, pristine lakes, and beautiful open spaces are some of our greatest resources. We must steward and protect them. As a legislator, I will work to help our farms afford and implement sustainable practices, and hold big corporate polluters responsible.
I will also work to make sure that as our state transitions to renewable energy, our communities have control over the siting of these projects and benefit from them economically. I will fight against any deals that try to take advantage of our communities and make sure that we are always treated like the important partners we are.
NYS can also help local governments upgrade public works like wastewater infrastructure to withstand the challenges of our changing climate.
What measures do you support to improve and secure elections and voting access in our state?
One of the bedrock foundations of our democracy is barrier-free access to the voting booth for every American, no matter which state they live in. As a four-term elected county legislator, I have worked to ensure our Board of Elections has everything needed to guarantee that voters can vote and that those votes are accurately counted. This includes updated security software, electronic poll books, and mobile ballot printers.
What policies will you pursue to promote social and racial justice in our state?
In 2024, my big push has been to make sure every voter I speak to knows to turn their ballot over to vote for the NYS ERA amendment. If passed, this addition to the state constitution would protect against unequal treatment based on a person's ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, and pregnancy outcomes, including the right to abortion care.
If passed, this would be a huge legal step into equalizing the playing field in the state.
Of course more work will need to be done--but this gets us closer to justice.
