Abolishing the electoral college would make our system more democratic. No matter where you live or how your neighbors vote, your vote should matter.
High-Speed Rail: We can build a new transportation system that helps break America’s reliance on fossil fuels and reduces emissions. New stations in cities between major hubs spur development in communities that missed out on the tech-field job growth post recession. This development will lead to more walkable communities and expanded access to housing in urban centers and communities along the corridors that have missed out on growth coming out of the last recession.
Fusion Energy: We should have several options on the table for the future of energy and that includes investing in a moonshot like nuclear fusion. When it comes to energy, that’s the holy grail—and it’s a lot closer than most people think.
One major factor for why the United States has a higher rate of infant mortality than other wealthy nations is that we spend less money per capita on preventive care and welfare for infants and young children. But there’s no excuse that we are leading the developed world in infant mortality rates, and that those rates are especially high among Black mothers. I’m an original co-sponsor of the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, which tackles this problem with investments that address every driver of maternal mortality, morbidity, and disparities in the United States. And I was thrilled to see President Biden prioritize relief for women in the American Families Plan.
We must pass an assault weapons ban and background checks, enforce background checks for every purchase, stop allowing people who are on a terrorist no fly list to buy guns, enforce red flag laws, and have a serious discussion about mental health in this country. Additionally, I am proud to have introduced H.R.4347, the Mass Shooter Prosecution Act, which would allow U.S. law enforcement to prosecute mass shootings as acts of terrorism and enable law enforcement, in the wake of an attack, to uncover the broader network that supported the attack. We don’t currently prosecute mass shootings like the terrorist attacks that they are, This bill would expand our ability to prosecute the networks of online enablers behind these attacks.
We need to build an immigration system that’s fair, orderly, modern and secure. President Trump spent the last four years doing nothing but villainizing immigrants, separating families, putting kids in cages, and dividing the country by fear mongering on immigration.
There are 256,000 US citizen children who have at least one parent with DACA and roughly 1.5 million people in our country who live with a DACA recipient. If we don’t create a pathway to citizenship, if we don’t fix our immigration system, the loss of our essential workers will absolutely devastate our economy.
