Two of the last four U.S. Presidents lost the popular vote, but won the Electoral College, and the consequence of that is that they left behind a majority-conservative Supreme Court that could last for decades to come. The Electoral College is undemocratic, outdated, and should be abolished. While the National Popular Vote Compact is a novel solution to this issue, I would vote in favor of a Constitutional Amendment that moves our Presidential elections to a popular vote.
My top priority on climate change is to ensure that we are continuing to recognize the global threat that climate change presents. Climate-linked migration is a real issue that will impact the United Sates, as is the risk of armed conflict as a result of resource scarcity driven by climate change. I have advocated this position as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and I continue to work on the Armed Services Committee, with success, to ensure that our bases around the world are adapting to climate change. Climate resilency is a big issue in the 9th Congressional District, and we must continue to focus on ensuring that climate-adaptation is affordable for everyone.
I am a proud co-sponsor of the Black Maternal Health MOMNIBUS Act, which provides a comprehensive set of policy solutions and a roadmap for addressing maternal health disparities. I am also proud to support the Biden-Harris Administration's extension of post-partum maternal benefits from 2 to 12 months, the launching of the National Maternal Health Hotline, and increased training for maternal care providers on the topic of substance abuse, among other initiatives. We need to increase access, and we need to make sure that maternal health is priortized at home and around the country. That includes continuing to support local mothers, maternity nurses, and doctors in protecting our existing maternity care and expanding access.
I would push to pass an assault weapons ban on DAY ONE of the next Congress, requiring background checks to purchase a gun and ensuring that our strong gun laws in Massachusetts are not threatened by loose rules in other states. We should all be embarrassed that guns are the leading cause of death for children in our country. We must pass strong laws that respect law-abiding gun owners while keeping guns out of the wrong hands.
An important first step is to pass the bipartisan immigration reform package that was already negotiated between both parties and is ready for a vote in Washington. It wasn't until the GOP nominee for President decided it would hurt his election prospects that this package was taken off the table by Republicans. Specifically on the topic of children and families, we need to streamline the immigration system and ensure that adjudication of immigration status is both thorough and speedy. The current system incentivizes desperate people to do whatever it takes to enter the United States, and that includes hiring traffickers that are only focused on making a profit.

Article II, Section I of the U.S.C. created the Electoral College to prevent the tyranny of the majority, or mob rule, and protect the interests and rights of the minority and marginalized. Just as I advocate for all my patients and their families irrespective of race, color, creed, or national origin in my dual capacity as a registered nurse serving an inner-city demographic in an acute-care hospital while also serving an incarcerated population in a forensic psychiatric state facility, I would advocate for my constituents and fellow citizens. The Electoral College promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and precludes the existential threat of demagoguery and the monopoly of political power in our constitutional republic.
Fighting climate change and fostering renewable energies are essential to building a sustainable planet and a viable economy. Reducing greenhouse gases and achieving a net-zero emissions economy to secure the right of every person to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live in a healthy community, now and in the future, are worthwhile. I would promote equity by not coercing lower and fixed-income consumers who are being suffocated by high inflation and a high cost of living due to the out-of-control, out-of-touch spending of the Biden-Harris regime to replace gas appliances with electric appliances given the rising cost of electricity, to replace fuel-efficient cars and hybrids with expensive EV. This would widen the wealth gap.
Increasing maternal and infant mortality rates is an indictment of the failed leadership and policies of the WHO, CDC, NIH and DPH. Poor health hygiene, poor water quality, malnourishment of mother and infant, inadequate prenatal/neonatal and medical care, use of infant formula as a breast milk substitute contribute to the rates. Premature births congenital defects, preterm and low birth weight, neonatal infections, and maternity pregnancy complications contribute to the rise. Reaching a healthy weight, getting proper nutrition, controlling chronic morbidities, and treating substance use/abuse disorder can help women achieve better health and wellness before pregnancy, which can reduce mortalities. Promoting WIC and PCP would be helpful.
The #1 cause of death by gun is suicide. The #2 cause is gang violence. If the goal of firearm regulation is to lower the death-by-gun rate, then we must solve the epidemics of mental illness and gag violence plaguing the U.S. Gaslighting law-abiding citizens who lawfully exercise their 2A rights while whitewashing mental illness and gang violence has not reduced the death-by-gun rate. A successful gun control policy includes treating the mentally ill while incarcerating the violent criminal offenders. Instead of taking away the rights of law-abiding citizens, we should take away the freedom and liberty of the law-breaking violent criminal offenders. The people who break the law pay the price, while the people who obey the law enjoy the 2A.
The open border policy of the Biden-Harris regime created a human, child, sex, and drug trafficking catastrophe. This humanitarian disaster was avoidable and foreseeable. The Mexican cartels control the southern border. They use their drug smuggling channels to traffic women and children. The open border policy is anti-women and anti-children. Sealing our borders and enforcing international immigration laws for asylum seekers and refugees would liberate women and children from the cartels' evil hands. It also would reduce the flow of Fentanyl, heroin and cocaine that has resulted in more U.S. deaths than the combined death totals of WWI and WWII. Open borders enrich the cartels while victimizing the vulnerable. It's inhumane and immoral.
